USING JV-1010 WITH LOGIC PRO X

Hello! Glad I found this forum, hopefully someone can help.
I have had a JV-1010 for years that I had only used as stand alone along with my controller and recorded via audio outs on the unit. I recently bought a new MacBook Pro with M2 processor I am learning Logic Pro. I have successfully connected to the 1010 as an "external midi instrument" thru a Mio interface to record midi data and run the audio outs into my SSL computer interface as a separate audio track so that I can hear what is being played. The only sound I can get is when the GM (general midi) is selected on the 1010 and even then only a piano sound. If I change the dial to any other patches no sound comes through, though you can see the midi indicator light on the 1010 flash as I play.
Can anyone tell what I am doing wrong??
Thanks!
