Re: picked up a Motif ES.
I recently picked up a Motif ES too (got the ES7)... it makes a great complement to the Fantom. I've just posted one of my Fantom songs redone on the Motif in the "Show Your Music" section.

I'm starting to get jealous of all you rich people that can afford both a Fantom and a Motif... I think I'll go buy a lottery ticket or something!!

Re: picked up a Motif ES.
When you have a chance, can you give a comparison of it to the Fantom X in terms of what the ES does better than the X and where does it lag in terms of sounds, features, programming, ease of use, etc.? Thanks!

Re: picked up a Motif ES.
well i touched on the headlines. trouble is, i'd be best comparing both keyboard versions, whereas i have the FXR
it's all down to personal taste & also down to one's ability with user interfaces really.
for me the sounds in the Mo are easier to play with - i don't really "get" the Roland way so easily, even tho the basics are similar (up to four partials etc). so that's just personal feeling, and a large amount of laziness.
for me the UI on the Mo is indeed easy, but i did need the DVD to get me into the way of thinking. Largely for me the Mo scores with it's sequencing options which i find to be intuitive, and very rich in features. it's nice not to have to fuss about the insert FX on the first 8 tracks for a start.. no juggling to get the patches to sound as desired.
I like the way i can record the MIDI output of an arp, and therefore use a different arp on every track if i want. But i don't really use them that often.
I LOVE the pattern mode. I find it so easy to lay down a quick drum track (i use the FXr's drums by and large though), and then build it up, copy that over, delete what i didn't want.. maybe "remix" the drum track using the remix feature to make things more interesting.
sure the FX can do a lot of that, but there's a real immediateness about the Motif that i love
As stated above i love the FXr's sheen.. rich sounding voices.. the Mo's are more "direct" & upfront, and that's cool too, esp for bass & EP patches.
I use the FXr for re-sampling the Mo & FXr together
I do find the limited keys & small screen of the FXr a pain to navigate, and i do find the sampling hard to "get" sometimes if i've not used it in a while. just a bit of an issue with the UI i guess. FWIW i do remember the FS61 (same ergo as the FX keyboards) to be much more intuitive than the FXr but about equal to the Mo, and sometimes the Mo is better. People seem to think the big screen makes it easier, but in reality, given time with both systems, this really isn't any issue. every one of them has it's quirks, but i do favour the Mo. Just.

Rob

Re: picked up a Motif ES.
OK ... I'll join in too ... I confess I got an ES6 a few weeks ago to complement the X8 ...
I also got the virtual acoustic PLG150VL plug-in board and a breath controller ... man that is fun to play ... and this was a major draw for me.
It's also useful to have a synth-type controller available as an alternative to the weighted action of the X8.
The acoustic guitar sounds and associated arpeggios were also a factor ... a real guitarist would be so much better, but when you live in a small town your options are limited
. The arpeggios are also useful to help jumpstart songwriting sometimes ... they give you some riffs you're not used to playing as a keyboardist.
It will take a while for me to reach conclusions about specific things that the Motif does a little better than the Fantom -- some particular sounds come to mind, but we'll see after I work some Motif stuff into tracks. The Fantom is still the main workhorse.
I feel so much better now. Nothing more to hide.
Cheers,

ncsteff, bizarre, I got the PLG150VL & BC3 along with my ES7 too.... and yes it is great fun!
Still Learning, I've had my years of being in debt, and the first years when I started my own company and having hardly any income. But my company is doing great now, and having split from my wife nearly 2 years ago (and that cost me nearly $100k!) I decided it was time to treat myself.
Raisindot, you can compare the Motif and the Fantom's sounds by hearing my song done on each keyboard in this thread.

Dave, if you ever feel the need to "treat" a fellow Fantomizer...well, you've got my address!
$100k for the Big D eh? gosh, I guess the old saying "it's cheaper to keep 'er" is true! I know this big, shady guy in East St. Louis that could have taken care of your little problem for far less than $100k! just kidding
Keep on truck'in big guy!
