Are These Monitors Good?
M-Audio Studiophile BX5 Powered Studio Monitors
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid ... id/603277/
They are in my budget and are a nice size. I don't play live and just want something that sounds good when I play the Fantom in my room. This will be the first time I ever use something other than headphones with my keyboard.
Also, will the bass probably be ok without a subwoofer?

Re: Are These Monitors Good?
be careful with the small M-audios. I bought a similar pair over a year ago ( it may have been a size smaller) and I returned them the next day. They could not hold bass or piano.
I exchanged them for Behringer Truths and I am happy.

Those Truths are about the same price it seems. I wonder if Guitar Center will have them for me to look at.
Thanks for the input.

Re: Are These Monitors Good?
Are those monitors self powered. (the Behringers) The B2031's on MusiciansFriend says that have
"Two integrated high-power amplifiers"
Proud owner of a brand new Fantom X7!!

Re: Are These Monitors Good?
Comparing monitors is even more subjective than comparing synths, so shopping must = listening + buying only from a store with generous return policy!
From my experience, no small monitor will sound bass well. I've only dealt with Roland and Event monitors (currently monitor with Event Tria system, but would love to scale down, even at the expense of bass response) and haven't found any small monitors w/o subwoofer that satisfy. Anyone happy w/ bass output in his or her "small" monitors?

Re: Are These Monitors Good?
yes, the Truths are self powered.
True they don't handle sub bass, but you need a sub woofer to handle that. I bought a 12 " Cervin
Vega hi fi type sub and that does a respectable job.

Maybe they're not particularly small, but my Mackie HR824 monitors go WAAAAAY low, with a ruler flat frequency response down to 30Hz. You definitely don't need a sub with them, unless perhaps you're doing surround for movies and need the sub for the LFE channel.
Note that bass response in particular is heavily affected by your room. Many rooms are not properly designed acoustically and reflections coming from the wall, ceiling etc can easily cancel out your bass frequencies. If you treat your room with bass traps etc this will actually _increase_ bass response in most cases plus the bass will become much tighter and better defined. Treating your room may have more effect than adding a sub woofer.
The Truths are definitely pretty good for the money but they're not in the same league as the Mackies.

Re: Are These Monitors Good?
I have the Event TR5's and I like 'em alot. My mixes seem to reproduce on other systems much better now that I use them for mixdown. True, they are not gonna give you club-shakin' subbass... but they do a real good job.

Re: Are These Monitors Good?
absolutely true you can't compare the Truths to the Mackies.
Truths are bang for the buck powered monitors, typical of the Behringer approach.
I admit to lusting for the Event Precision 8's. I will have to shop the TR 8's and compare to the Precision 8's. If there is a big diff, I would go with the Precision 8's

Re: Are These Monitors Good?
Yes don't get the small ones. I have the BX8s, GREAT monitors. Great bass, big difference with the 5's. More expensive than the truths, but I feel they are much better monitors, more than worth the difference in price.
Re: Are These Monitors Good?
You guys might laugh at me, but I don't care (well, maybe a little, so don't laugh too hard...).
I just purchased some monitors from pretty much the only store available here in town. They don't carry much stuff, so my options were rather limited. I didn't want to buy online because I didn't want to risk not liking them and having to pay to return them, etc., etc.
So anyway, I bought this pair for $250.00 and I like them a lot. I haven't had much experience with monitors, even though I've been recording stuff since I was 14 - most of the time I'd end up in a studio to record the final product.
These little fellows have RCA, 1/4", optical and coaxial inputs. You can connect 2 analogs or 1 analog and 1 digital simultaneously, and each input has its own level knob. They're 24-bit/96kHz. I connected my FX6 through coaxial and the sound is crisp. Low end is pretty decent for units this size.
And the brand of these monitors is..... Roland. DM-20 Digital Stereo Micro Monitors to be more specific.
Has anybody heard of/experienced/owned/messed around with these monitors? I already know I like them, but I'm just curious to hear other people's opinion.
Thanks!
