"Truth in wine?"
Ah yes, nature's own truth serum! And why would we have it any other way? After all, anyone with two OASYS' and two Jupiter-80's gets our complements for sonic brilliance whatever the circumstances!

Re: JP80 - hugely disappointed with it.
Interesting thread despite the ascerbic responses :D
I'm currently looking at a JP-80 as my lower tier board (looking at this and the nord stage), to compliment my Kronos (I'm one of the rare owners with a fully-working machine :D ) for my live rig.
There's no doubt that the JP80 is a monster with a very deep architecture, and whilst it's interesting to see the opposing responses from long-term owners, I think there is sound basis for finding a machine that integrates in YOUR setup, not the other way around. I'm a big opposer of changing your workflow to suit the equipment (despite being a super lon-term Apple user, they are just as guilty of this IMO) - and is the main thing I'll be looking at when I give the Jupiter a proper test drive.
But after my positive experiences with my v-synth xt, I'm looking forward to trying it.
Dan :)

Regarding that darn JP80 - and Kronos
For my first post here, after FINALLY seeing the Register option open up again, I'd like to say hi, first of all.
Second, you'll have to pry my Kronos out of my cold dead fingers. You guys who don't like it are just weird. ;-)
But on the JP, I must say that this is the most fascinating synth I've seen come along since the OASYS. And I have a feeling that I'll be more excited to get it than I was the Kronos, simply because of that SN stuff Roland put in it. Plus, I'm a long time Roland fan for many years. Swerved over to KORG since a few years ago, but the Jupiter and Integra have rekindled my enthusiasm. I know the synth world has pretty much dumped on it because Roland DARED call it a Jupiter, and the twits at Sonic State even went so far as to say that the thing wasn't a VA (WTH?!). But I've looked past that to see the instrument for what it is, a serious move forward for Roland, and a seriously good sounding synth. I may wind up getting both of them, and then selling some redundant gear to fund the addiction.
It seems that Kevin is a little reluctant to re-enter his thread, but then it is a little thick with fannish vapors. But I would like to know if he's reconsidered on any of his points because some of them I found to be a little puzzling.

Welcome synthguy99 :)
You touch on a really good point - would love to hear back from Kevin! So c'mon Kevin - let us know what you think about how this thread has developed!
LOL about the Kronos - can't fault you for loving a board (no matter which one it is); I'm a firm believer in the connection with your board is what truly drives creativity and passion - such as I have with the JP-80/V-Synth/OASYS.

Re: JP80 - hugely disappointed with it.
First of all, welcome SG99!
Mr. Knolan is definitely not thin-skinned so I don't think any "fannish vapors" (good phrase BTW!) would be enough to silence him for long. I think he said his piece and was at peace by getting some built up frustrations off of his chest. Even though a lot of us don't necessarily agree with some of his views, we definitely respect his opinions whatever they may be because we know he is not just another flamer fanboy!
I don't think many of the people on this forum hate the Kronos per se, but definitely have some negative emotions towards Korg and the way the OASYS discontinuation and the Kronos RH3 issue were handled amidst a lot of subterfuge and surreptitious behavior. Throw in a lot of vitriolic bashing and trashing of anything Roland does and yes, things can devolve into some highly-charged tit for tat outbursts real fast!
While you consider the Jupiter, don't forget giving a look-see to the mighty V-Synth also. Due to a collaborative effort, thousands of free patches were made available through this very forum and it makes for an outstanding sonic partner along with the Kronos and Jupiter and you can get one for good prices these days.
Best regards,
.:':.DH.:':.

Re: JP80 - hugely disappointed with it.
Good point SoundworldA.D. - Kevin's initial post may have been the therapy he needed!
But Kevin is only to be highly respected and is certainly no 'flamer fanboy'. He always raises things that opens my eyes a little more, one way or the other.
And yes, synthguy99 - do look at the V-Synth too (or get one with a JP-80 :). Of all the boards I have had, the V is the easiest to use, easiest to manage files down to single sound level, produces amazing sounds that are all high quality and yet still remains a hugely powerful creative instrument.

Welcome to the Clan synthguy99!!
I think SoundWorld and Cello already said it all about Kevin's feelings regarding his JP-80, but at the end is up to him to judge if all his initial statements are still valid or not. ;-)
In my opinion (and don't get me wrong...), despite it's alleged kbd and building quality problems, Kronos is a killer board, and I would like to have one myself.
Regarding Supernatural sounds on JP-80 Integra-7, IMHO are a very good move for Roland (despite not being perfect and with lots of missing parameters and controls, according to some opinions), and they are also part of my wish list for 2013 :-D
Again, repeating what our other two colleagues said, don't forget to give a look to the V-Synth (2.0, XT or GT), as it is really one of the best and user friendly synths I know, which possesses capabilities not present on any other boards, like Variphrase, AP-S (GT) and Vocal Designer.

Welcome "synthguy99"! Are you by chance the same "synthguy" from Gearslutz? If yes, then you surely remember the really interesting and valuable thread and our exchange in this thread, where I've discovered a connection between Skrillex and Miles Davis : http://www.gearslutz.com/board/electron ... erent.html. But meanwhile I had to retire from my temporary and exhausting "performance" as "MusicFan" at Gearslutz.synthguy99 wrote:For my first post here, after FINALLY seeing the Register option open up again, I'd like to say hi, first of all.
Of course, only OASYS users have the right and privilege to bash and hate the Kronos, nobody else has this right and privilege...synthguy99 wrote:Second, you'll have to pry my Kronos out of my cold dead fingers. You guys who don't like it are just weird. ;-)

Exactly my own impression!synthguy99 wrote:But on the JP, I must say that this is the most fascinating synth I've seen come along since the OASYS.
You know, if a good Psychiatrist hits the nerve of his patient, the patient first begins to hate his Psychiatrist, which is the effect of the so called psychological transference, which is a part of the healing process. We should give Kevin some time to resolve this transference...synthguy99 wrote:It seems that Kevin is a little reluctant to re-enter his thread, but then it is a little thick with fannish vapors. But Kevin is smarter than any high ranking psychiatrist so i doubt the theory on transference would work on him lol

Yes Billy, we are indeed lucky to have such finely tuned minds in our midst to keep us informed and entertained. Meanwhile, I adapted an old "Jungism" to suit our fun thread here:
A particularly beautiful synthesizer is a source of terror. As a rule, a beautiful synthesizer is a terrible disappointment.
Carl Jung
Nah...just doesn't work for me! I'll keep my money and the head shrinkers can keep their jingoisms! ;-)

Yes, I remember that, and caught your "retirement." I must say that it's a nuthouse over there. I guess my skin thickened up, and I tend to fight with pillows and woopie-cushions - humor, NARF! - so I suppose they must tolerate me a bit more.Dany wrote:Welcome "synthguy99"! On synths, I'm kind of ecumenical. I sort of love everything. Well, except the CS-50/60, Gaia and Venom. Cheezy, limp or gnarly synths don't really appeal to me. Then again, I bet I could use all three of those guys in a track. On the Kronos, I haven't had a bit of trouble - 88 key, and I've noticed that those that have at KORG Forums number about 15 or so mouthy malcontents. Just think of how many dozens (hundreds? thousands?? which yes, are a different subject) more hate on the JP and I-7. And I will say that even if I did have problems, I'd keep at KORG till they made my Kronos right, because it's at least as irreplaceable as a Jupiter-80. AL-1 and MOD-7 would be enough to keep me coming back, no matter what, even with all the other toys I have to play with. And then there's all the rest of the studio in the box stuff it does.
Anyway, sometime soon, I intend to bump Roland's sales a bit. I will admit that I'd prefer a workstation version, and if one shows up at NAMM, I might just hold off until they ship about Aprilish. But I wouldn't have to, the JP and/or Integra would suffice. I do wish Roland would open up SN for us to play with. The acoustic sounds seem pretty much like GM presets on a Soundcanvas we can tweak ever so little, and I'd love to have something like the Technics WS synths, which let you run its samples through just about any of the modeling algorithms to create weird, interesting new textures. But the VA should be enough to keep me happy, running back n forth between it and Kronos to whip up all sorts of synthy goodness. And... my dozen and a half other toys... ;P
I will be keeping an eye on the boards for tips, and poking at the nets for tutorials, because particularly on the JPs, it seems that there are a few quirks that have people grouchy. Ahem. But I've used Yamahas for years off and on, and I doubt too many synths are as annoying as some oddball choices Yammy did. And then there's the PC3, which can poke you right in the eye on occasion.

Ha! There's right, and there's wrong!Wrong side of the road? I think you'll find that the entirety of the rest of the World who drive on the right are in the wrong! :D
Think about this...the majority of the world is "right handed" so in that respect, sitting on the left side of the carriage and shifting with old righty just makes mighty good sense!
On the other hand, with safety in mind, it would make better sense for those who drive on the right to get out of the car curbside and vice versa.
Who designs these things anyway? Go figure...several countries over there in the EU drive on the right, and Jamaica and Japan drive on the left!
Isn't it the most! ;-D
