Bruce Lychee wrote:Saying the Jupiter is suited for wedding music doesn't even make any sense. Wedding bands do covers and need very specific sounds unless they are hacks. The Jupiter just isn't suited to that. Sample based instruments are far better for that kind of work... Which is why a board like the Kronos seems to be favored among the cover band crowd.
Exactly, the Kronos almost does everything for you, with all that "Karma" and stuff. There are some people that call it the ROMB (Real One Man's band).
;-)

Wedding Music...LOL that's a good one

Aw, what a touching video. Nope, the Jupiter is just not the one for scoring a video like that. Better to check out the Integra-7.

Can someone show me a Jupiter 80 at a wedding? I saw it at a Madonna concert recently, but we all know that's just a concert, not a wedding.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Jupiters and Integra are half-sample based instruments. And while the Kronos is half-sample based too, it does have actual models of vintage synths in it, including a venerable six operator FM legend which has been taken to modular synth proportions. If anything, a Kronos is an electronic music studio in a keyboard case. All things in perspective, and all that. ;-)

By the way, why are you guys all going on and on about not feeding a troll for... about a dozen posts now?? This is a strange planet I'm stranded on...

Not at all what I saying. Cover bands need very specific sounds to replicate the sounds used in the songs they are covering. The only way to cover that spectrum of sounds is to have access to samples. While the Jupiter SN sounds use samples in the attack, they don't allow you to import additional samples and create additional SN sounds and you can't replicate many vintage sounds with the non synth SN sounds. The Jupiter isn't a workstation and simply isn't suited to that task. It gives you a pallet of expressive sounds to create music, but it isn't great for cover bands.

I was an owner of the Kronos so I don't need any lessons on its functionality. Furthermore, whatever it's functionality, the Kronos is built around an unacceptably weak physical platform. It's no knock that it is great for cover bands. It has a powerful sampler and can easily serve the needs of the one man band. I just don't find it significantly more interesting than the O and wish it had a little more O in its physical design.

Bruce, I'm still not suer what you're saying about the JP, cover bands and needing samples. If you mean flying in iconic trademark backing vocal parts or something, that's one thing. But as a synthesist, I think I could provide the sounds needed for most covers with a Trident or first gen Motif, let alone something much more powerful like a JP or Kronos.

As for the Kronos build quality, I haven't had any trouble with mine, many haven't. But you have what pleases you, as do I, so good on both of us.

I'm not sure what you don't get. If you are covering a song and want to replicate a particular sound, it is easier to do that with access to samples rather than the SN sounds of the Jupiter. I specifically mentioned non synth sounds because anyone familiar with the Jupiter will tell you that they are expressive and sound great, but they have their own sound. If you are covering a broad spectrum of songs and want to replicate the sounds used in those songs, you are much better off with access to samples. Workstations would make a better choice for someone who has those needs.

The fact that many haven't had a problem with their Kronos doesn't really change the reality that an inordinate number of people did and that in my case, Korg handled it like crap. I'm just done buying their products until they improve their manufacturing standards and really don't need and all in one solution.

I had problems when i bought my kronos too:
"mad os...the badest new synth i ever bought in my life"

Just a few words about a wedding musicians:
wedding musicians are often far better musicians than some forum bashers who put one finger on a karma combi and feel as "kings of the world"

I prefer playing weeding music with my jupiter 80 than dreaming about "having the most powerful synth to feel myself the best musician of the world"

The jupiter 80 is for true musicians if you want to play:
poor modulations but nothing more than chords and notes..
