When fitted with the required batteries, does the Gaia charge them when on ac power, or must they be charged separately?

Unfortunately not. When you've got the batteries installed and plug and turn on for (AC-adapter), this will take priority.
Purchasing re-chargeable batteries can only be re-charged in the re-charge battery holder.
