Hi, I've been playing piano for a long time now. Bought the Juno Stage because I liked the piano sound & feel but especially because I want to expand into new sounds and start to build layered songs. I'm starting to think I need to take a sound engineering class though because it's a little overwhelming. I've gotten far enough along that I can select and modify different patches, performances, and rhythms... but I really want to start experimenting by recording and layering to build a full song.
I don't quite understand how the USB thing works (do I need to buy a Roland USB?), and I haven't tried connecting to my computer yet (haven't installed software).
How do I record and playback? Do I need to connect to the computer to do it? I just watched a how-to video on YouTube all about assigning different parts to the mixer, but I'm trying to understand when the playing comes in...
Forgive the newbie here, I've read the whole manual, and a lot of it is over my head. But I'm eager to learn!!
Newbie wants to record / build a song
Re: Newbie wants to record / build a song
JUNO Stage is a performance keyboard and doesn't feature a song recorder, only a song/audio player. Therefore you need to use your computer for sequencing. First you need to install the JUNO Stage USB driver, so that your computer can access it as a MIDI device when you connect it with a USB cable. Next you obviously need a sequencer application like like Logic or Cubase on a Mac, or Sonar or Cubase on a PC.

Thanks for the prompt reply, very helpful! So if I'm interested in building sounds & rhythm upon each other in live performance for a song, is using pedals and playback the trick?

I use HP USB 4G cards .. purchased somewhere via Amazon.com I believe. I use a set of 4 of them and rotate every week for backup purposes. I also use the Playlist editor on my PC to put midi and mp3 files on the USB sticks.
Using a modern MIDI keyboard like the Juno Stage necessitates you have a computer .. a newer notebook/laptop with at least 4 USB ports .. and Vista works great. The USB connect from your PC gives you MIDI IN and OUT at the same time. Sonar LE which comes with your Stage records MIDI tracks and can play them back via the Stage. If you run a mike to separate mixer with an audio to USB audio converter you can easily record a separate audio track also via another USB connect on the PC.
The Juno Stage Editor which comes with the Stage makes working and setting up a Performance an easy task. It is an incredable piece of software .. just add the parts(sounds) you want for your song idea in the 16 tracks .. turn the parts on or off as needed when recording.
