Hi guys ...
I've noticed that the external source audio input on the fantom has a "microphone" input setting.
Does this mean that it's ok to plug in a mic and record vocals through the fantom into Cubase?

Yes. As long as it's a dynamic mic. In OS2 you can even record your voice straight into an audio track. See manual page 141-159, or most of your Audio Track Expansion manual.

Not sure wether I understand this bit though. You connect to Cubase via midi, and audio is not midi. So no, I guess not. You'll have to mix down your samples to wavs/aiffs, transfer them to your PC/Mac hard disk via USB, and trigger these wavs/aiffs in Cubase.

Don I don't connect with midi ... the output from my fantom is via SPDIF digital into cubase so it's all "audio .wav" in cubase ... I'm just wondering if the mic signal output from the fantom will be as good as using a mixer with mic preamp?

Thanks for clarifying, eventhough it renderend my answer totally obsolete. This one still goes out to the entire Fantomized community then: Yo, fellow Fantom owners! (bump) Please help our colleague knopfler. In spite of my twenty years of hardcore rock 'n roll keyboardist hands-on experience I can't help the guy. But I know you can. So. Bump.

Knopfler,
yes, that will work. Anything you sing into a mic plugged into the input jack will be sent via the S/P-DIF connection to Cubase.
It won't be as good as using a dedicated pre-amp or even a mixer, but is certainly a very usable "cheap" intro into recording vocals.

Ok guys ... THANKS as ever (I dunno what I'd do without everyone here)!!!
So ... my best option for recording vocals is a mixer with preamps? YES? I need to get this sorted 'cos I'm not known as the Fantom Ficko for nothing???

Re: Audio Input socket on Fantom
Knopfler, go for the small mixer with mic preamp. Even if you upgrade later to a different audio interface or even a dedicated mic preamp you will ALWAYS find some use for a small mixer as you expand your gear.
my two cents .. David

Re: Audio Input socket on Fantom
Try it out with your Fantom, and see if its good enough for you! If you want better, try a mixer!
That's my uber-simple suggestion

Re: Audio Input socket on Fantom
If you have a dynamic mic - use you'r fantom input via spdif. Small and cheap mixer don't give to you any advantage in quality of recording.
Re: Audio Input socket on Fantom
Kulagin,
Is there an issue using the fantom with "pre-amp" of "phantom power"? I'm not very knowledgeable on these matters but read these things in the forums ...
Thanks
