Where's that string sound coming from?

Post by beefheart »

Hi, I've got a xa and am just about getting my head round how it works. However 1 prob I can't fix. I am creating songs (from scratch) and trying to put a Bass sound on track 2. Whatever I do I also get a orchestral string sound playing at the same time as the bass sound. Must be something to do with Layers or the "performance" but I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Cheers

When you record a song, make sure to look in what sound generator mode you are in. There are mainly 2 modes, performance (for layering lots of sounds and patches, basically) and patch mode (basically for 1 sound/patch).

If you are in performance mode, you will play the sounds in that performance. Which can be more than one sound, of course.

Now, if you want to create a song with only one sound (patch type), go to patch mode and record from there, using the sound you want.

If you want multiple sounds (I mean different sounds for different tracks for instance), go to performance mode.
There, you can create your own performance with the sounds you want. Now, if you want to record only one of the patches in the performance, go to song edit->track edit->channel change->change the desination and the source to the part in the performance that you wanna play. From there, that track will only play the part (patch) in the performance you directed it to.
When you record, I *think* that the track will only record the source part that you specified in track edit. If not, just mute the other parts or uncheck the "assign to keyboard" check box.

Hope its all the same in the Xa, sorry if not.

I had that problem too, but if you gor layer/split mode, en than choose for preset 1 (prst 1 seq. template) than all the 16 tracks are set to piano sound if you than go to performance mode. If you than record a single track than you hear just one track. Befor or after you record, you vcan change the sound.... You won't hear any layers or what so ever.

that is because only one part (if I remember right) is "assigned to keyboard" and this is the only sound that you hear when you play that performance. Its just like muting other parts or unchecking the "assign to keyboard" check box.

Better to understand what you're doing instead of doing something because it works without knowing why it works.

Just my 2 cents, have fun:P

You got me there... I know how it works, I found it out after I did what I described.... Bu still I do it the same because then everything is the way I want it except the program changes, but I change them while I'm progressing.....

But you're absolutly right!

hehe yea I know what you mean. Sometimes you do something only because it works, but then you realy understands why it works and don't want to start messing with doing that thing the other way (the "right" or "good" way), a way that should probably work...After all, its working isn't it? hehe..

Too late for me, I hope I didn't uncover my underpants' color! hmm
Good night \m/0_o\m/ .

Paul:

This is a Fuc^%)"$ problem with Fantom xa performance mode.
For some reason you can?turn mute/turn off the selected part even using swith off. Let me explain better. There is a select swith for 1-8 parts on performance (This are the new buttons not presents on X6/7/8 models) . Imagine using 4 layer in a song, part 1 strings, part 2 bass, part 3 piano . part 4 brass.
If your selected swith is assigned to patch 1 and for some reason you need to play piano only, you always must hear the string patch (part 1). even turning off the mute or swithcing off the keyboard part. To fix this you must select part 3 and now you "must" always ear piano :-?
If you?re playing live you must find this bug very irritating.
Roland must fix this problem inmediatly. This never happens on Jv, or xp series.

Hey thanks to everyone who replied. I actually did some more digging last night and managed to get rid of the string sound. My Xa is at home so I can't remember exactly what I did, but it was something to do with the "output src" (or something like that) for the particular part of the performance. (I DO understand the difference between performance and patch mode - although that kept me going for quite a while!!!) There was one option which I could set the part to either "A" "B" "MFX2" "1" "2" etc. By mucking about with this I managed to get rid of the rogue sound. This is something to do with the destination of the sound (I'm guessing), but I don't understand fully.
