hi any comments from anybody on this subject would be great. I make hip-hop and the real time, time strectch is making my mouth water. I use a mpc1k for sequencing ASR right now, and I am thinking about selling this setup and moving up to just a X6.(will I be disassapointed/is the x6 as flexable/what will I be lossing/gaining?) later down the road I want to add a MPC4k anybody use this combo?
thanks guys

Here's some things to think about:
1. The ASR-10 is a full sampler. It has more looping options. The realtime time-stretching is not as smooth as the ASR's offline stretching, but the Fantom has offline as well.
2. You can't load sample libraries into the Fantom without a clunky program called translator. People still support the ASR and there are tons of sample disks out there. You will lose all of your sounds, unless you want to sit there and rebuild them from scratch.
3. The types of Effects on the ASR-10 are not available on the Fantom. The reverbs in particular are not up to what the ASR can do. It may have 5 effects processors, but they are not the same.
4. Load times and file management on the Fantom are poorly implemented. You'll get much better load/save times using SCSI on your ASR. We're talking ten times slower.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Fantom X. As a former ASR-10 user I miss it and regret selling it. Considering it was released in 1992 it still blows away most of the samplers that were released since then.
The Fantom has a great sequencer and makes a great centerpiece to a studio. It's got a great set of sounds built in that I feel will appeal to the Hip-hop crowd. I think the Fantom can handle all of what the MPC can do. Also I remember the action of the keybed on the ASR is phenominal. Everytime I go into a music store and play an old Ensoniq I really miss the keybed.

I agree with MIDIguru -- almost exactly the same things I'd say... love my FanX, but I decided to keep the ASR-10 too. Sigh.. more gear to find room for.
The reverbs on the ASR-10 (with detuning params, which the FanX doesn't havein its reverbs) are just hard to reproduce with anything else (that I've got, at least).
Plus, until roland adds a real 'local' switch for performance parts, it's still harder to use as a master keyboard and for live than my ASR.

i'll 100% buy your ASR-10 off you.....
I've had mine for 12 years now, and it still works perfectly....
I'd like to buy another asr-10 as a back-up, just in case anything goes wrong with mine....
12 years worth off work gone, if my asr-10 dies on me.......
Where are you based dan ?

The ASR-10 uses the 24 bit ESP-2 effects chip. This chip was capable of doing what we now consider standard effects all the way back in 1992.
I'd say that the reverbs are very natural, but muffled on the ASR and on the Fantom they are clear and very metallic.

Would anyone here think having a FANTOM/ASR combo is like pretty much having the same PIECE (besides the fact that they both can do things the other can't)?.
I absolutely love the warm sound and effects of the ASR and would love to re-purchase one to go along with my FANTOM. Only problem to me is, I can pretty much do everything the ASR does ON my fantom.
To me it would be like having an MPC 4000 and a MPC 60 combo...
I don't know
ADVICE?
