timing problems/ seq - Fantom-S

Post by JAIR »

Hi all. Probably there are past posts regarding this subject, but I can´t find them back....

The issue is that when I do a rythm, using 2 or more samples, they sound very good. But when I add the piano parts, bass and brasses, I feel that in some moments the tempo becomes "unperfect".... some notes seems to be "jumping" or out of time. I have tried to solve this problem by eliminating the after touch feature, in order to free resources, but nothing occurs.
Some technicians, at roland USA, told me that the Fantom-S needs more RAM memory in order to do a better processing **like PCs**, so i upgraded from 128mB to 256mB.... and the problem is still there ... I think that it was a poor support, because i told them I always had 94 percent of free RAM memory... but I decided to try what they were advicing to discard.

What it could be.... poliphony... or poor processing....?

Is this problem reported in the FANTOM-x new boards?

I hope you guys can help me...

best regards,

This may be caused by polyphony overload. Go to MENU -> Part Information -> Voices and see if you have the total voices used bar reaching the end too often.

Also, you can use the Shift Clock function to shift the sequencer track with intensive note input by 3-4 clocks. This will make the sequencer less overloaded.

"Some technicians, at roland USA, told me that the Fantom-S needs more RAM memory in order to do a better processing "

These guys are wrong: RAM only adds an ability to create/load/edit more samples, but it does not add anything else.

Thanks for your answer Artemio. I´m very impressive, because is the first time I see some well based hypothesis about this "Sequencer overload matter"

1. Go to MENU -> Part Information -> Voices and see if you have the total voices used bar reaching the end too often.
*** I did it and everything seems to be normal, I´m using up to 65% of Fantom-S poliphony...

2. When you say "shift the seq track with intensive note input by 3 or 4 clocks", you mean I have to apply that change to all the 16 tracks? I have to espect more measures in my song? Like when you put the Beat in 1/4 instead of 4/4 ?

I will appreciate your explanation,

regards,

If it's not polyphony overload, it could also be a simple case of "over-quantization".

You can sort of answer this for yourself. Do you quantize everything? Do you always use the same quantize values?

Atremio's second suggestion speaks to the heart of this issue, by the way.

The gist is that it is virtually impossible for any sequencer or synth to play back a whole bunch of stuff on the exact same "ticK or "clock". Attempting to make it do so can result in unexpected results.

The worst offender in this regard is the Yamaha Motif Rack. It does all sorts of crazy nonsense if you cram too many notes on the same exact "tick".

What Artemio is suggesting is that you edit the part of the song where all of this stuff is happening. Select those measures on the most musically dense track(s), and then "shift" the notes back or forward by a clock or so. If you have REALLY heavy stuff going on, you may wish to shift one track forward by a clock or so, and another back by a similar amount.

In my FantomX manual, this is called the "Shift Clock" feature.

Doing this gives the Fantom some "breathing room" so to speak.
