*Effects automation help needed*

Post by kountryboi84 »

What's up clan I have 2 questions. First is there a way to route MFX automation to an effect like a slicer or flanger and control the amount of saturation with the assignable control knobs in realtime. Second is there a way to increase the amount of pitch value so that I can use automation with the control knobs to create a tape stop effect also in realtime? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi kountryboi84,

In a word or two: yes!

Is there a way to route MFX automation to an effect like a slicer or flanger and control the amount of saturation with the assignable control knobs in realtime?

According to the OM (p.270) MFX parameters marked with a sharp “#” can be controlled using a
specified controller. So, looking at the Slicer parameters you can control the Rate, Attack and Shuffle values. For the Flanger, you can control the Rate, Feedback and Balance.

You need to set the relevant controllers in the MFX Control screen. See OM p.213. Note that if you set more than one parameter to respond to the same CC message, both will change at the same time. Then, you need to set the four knobs to respond to the same CCs you've told the MFX parameters to respond to (see p. 51). Oh, and save your Patch when you're done :o)

Is there a way to increase the amount of pitch value so that I can use automation with the control knobs to create a tape stop effect also in realtime?

I'm sure there's a way to do this, but I can't remember the parameter you need (I don't think it's an effect and I've got the words "TIME" and "SAMP" in my head, but I can't find the relevant page). If no one else jumps in, and I remember I'll let you know!

Cheers

MFX AUTOMATION

What's up Andy thanks for the response. In order to get the MIDI implementation right I had to go to Control settings in Mixer mode and change the assignable knobs to "General 1-4" then go back to MFX control and change the Source to correspond with the Control settings then choose the destination. The Sensitivity is a little tricky because you have to adjust the selected effect parameter so that the amount is even, so that when you turn the knobs it effectively changes the parameter value. Also in order to affect a certain instrument it has to be routed solely to that specific effect, but Ima try to find a way around that.

TAPE STOP

This one was a little simpler to figure out. First you have to set one of your assignable knobs to "PITCH BEND". Then go into patch edit and under the pitch tab change the pitch bend up parameter to 0 and the down parameter to between 40-45. Now as you turn the knob down it will drop the pitch and as you turn it back it will return to 0 or the normal pitch. I love this effect!

Andy man I really appreciate all the help.

Ok Andy I'm stuck. The MFX automation seemed to work fine yesterday but today I can't seem to make it work and its got me aggy. I've assigned everything but i must have changed something along the way and now I can't get the effects to respond. Anyway any light on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, thanks for sharing the Tape Speed trick. I’ll have a go at that over the weekend 

As for the MFX automation thing…I’m not sure! Did you save everything (Patch settings, System settings (Mixer mode stuff)). I'll have another look and see if we've missed anything. Let me know if you sort it..

On looking again, the Knob & Switch controller settings are Global. Did you remember to save the settings when you'd set the knobs up? (OM p.125).

In the Patch effect settings itself you'd have to set the CC numbers to the relevant parameters and save the Patch as well, as written above.

I'll try it out tonight or tomorow & see if I can make it work. Let me know if this helps.

Cheers

Hey Andy thanks for helping me look into this. First what I found is using the dedicated pitch bend toggle is better than using the knob because it returns to 0 but the knob will affect the rest of the patches because placing it back to 0 is nearly impossible. It takes a little getting use to but overall its a better way to go. Second the MFX effects from what I can tell its patch based so in order to affect the specific effects parameters you have to go to patch edit, Ctrl, then change the Destinations to MFX CTRL 1-4. I was hoping there was a way to get around this. Anyway man let me know and I'm working on your D-beam situation.....
