Fantom-X USB-MIDI Control?
Fantom-X USB-MIDI Control?
In the Keyboard Magazine review, Jon Krogh mentions that the Fantom-X sort of completely shuts down all of its normal operations while transmitting over USB. Does this mean that if you are using the Fantom-X as a USB keyboard controller with a computer-based sequencer that you couldn't play the sounds of the Fantom from that sequencer (since the Fantom would be tied up transmitting over USB)? Thanks!
Re: Fantom-X USB-MIDI Control?
No, what he probably meant is that when you are in USB transfer mode, the Fantom prenends to be a USB storate device, and you cannot perform any operations on the board while you transfer data to/from PC. Once you exit USB transfer mode, you can continue your work.
But USB-MIDI is a separate feature. When you choose USB-MIDI in System -> USB, you can do what you want but the USB port will just serve as an extra MIDI in/out port.

That's very cool. I realize my three posts should probably be in the "new users" section, but since I'm a senior member, I just went ahead and posted them in GD.
Again, I appreciate your help, Artemio.

USB storage mode of Fantom XR
Artemio, that's very interesting.
When in USB transfer mode, do you require any special USB drivers on the computer side ? Is the Fantom XR emulating a standard USB storage device ? Or does it need proprietary Roland USB drivers ?
Reason I ask is to find out if the sample transfer could work in alternate operating systems (ie. Linux, Solaris, OS/2) which have standard USB mass storage drivers. This is important for me to find out before purchasing (or not). The alternative is to use a PC card, which will work in those OSes, but then I have to buy a large one an possibly several, and that's extra $$$
Of course the Roland site has very little info on this kind of spec , so your response is greatly appreciated !
Thanks.

Hi.
No special drivers required for USB storage mode. The Fatnom-X acts like a standard Mass Storage Device and shows up on your system as such. USB drivers are only need for MIDI over USB functions.

Unless you're still working with an older Windows Version like 98SE...
