Here's how to use Fantom XR in Windows 7 RC

Post by riojazz »

I've been using Windows 7 RC 32-bit and I really like it.

If you download the drivers for the Fantom XR and try to install them in Windows 7 RC, you will be told that the operating system is not supported. Here's how to install the drivers:

1. Download the latest driver, which is a zip file.

2. Uunzip the files.

3. [the first trick] Copy the files to another folder, making them visible/unzipped.

4. [the second trick] Use Device Manager, NOT Devices & Printers. Devices & Printers will load a troubleshooter that takes forever to get you nowhere. Instead, use the old Device Manager. Do this by Control Panel, Hardware, Device manager link

5. Turn on the Fantom XR. It will appear as Other Devices in the Device Manager.

6. Right-click on Fantom XR and select Update Driver.

7. Browse to where you put your driver files.

Hi guys,
Based on the process described here by **riojazz**, I was able to get ALL my gear and ALL my DAWs perfectly working with Windows 7, using the Windows Vista Drivers.
- SonicCell
- UA-25EX Audio/USB interface
- MIDI:UM-550 MIDI/USB / Patcher
- V-Synth XT
- PCR-500 MIDI Controller
- UM3-Ex, UM2-Ex
- Fantom Xa
- Boss BR-864 digital studio
- SONY Acid PRO 7.0c, Reaper v3.12 and SONAR 6 LE

One thing that was clearly noticed was the fact that even a single core Celeron PC, with 1Gb RAM was capable of running the DAWs without a glitch... with XP, this PC was perfectly uncapable of DAW recording at all.

Windows 7 performs a lot better than XP or Vista, that's for sure !!

Good work, Microsoft ( I never thought saying this... ;-) )

Hey Guys, this seemed like the solution I was looking for, but when I got to the point of choosing the unzipped directory, the Device Manager said "no drivers were found".

I tried the Vista 64, and unzipped the directory to the desktop. This is the directory I chose.

Am I missing something?

Please help!!

Thanks!!

I'm sorry you are having problems. My Roland Fantom worked fine in Vista and the procedure I wrote was for Windows 7. I do not use 64-bit OS (yet) so I cannot say anything about that.

While it should work, I would not in general ever unzip anything to the desktop, only because some folders contain hundreds of files and it would result in a visual nightmare. I recall there are only 10 or so files involved here.

But again, I'm talking about Windows 7.

I suggest you start a new thread with your problem, and make sure you put "Vista 64 bit" in the title.

Best of luck!
