what do you set your compressor settings to? and mixing down

Post by 2ToneTechN9ne »

what do you guys usually have your compressor set to to make it sound better. i have like the shittiest walmart speakers and its so hard for me to mix my songs down on them. anything that sounds good on them sounds shitty on other systems and vice versa. if you guys could give me some settings that make the bass hit a little harder or anything else that you know would make the mix sound better please let me know.

thanks,

1st thing you need to be successfull is either good headphone monitors or near field speaker monitors..
doing it on the cheap will not work.
There is no real quick fix for compression, its an art in itself and one important piece of equipment required are a your Ears.

Now go get some gear.

+1 for that
You want your songs to sound better- listen to Quinnx advice. Just getting decent speakers/headphones will improve your sound so much more than someone giving you a bunch of useless settings that may not apply to your song.

If you are unable to put down the cash- then you might want to make multiple mixes and record them to CD or ipod and play them back on different systems to see what sounds better- but this is a last resort and won't really improve your sound the way proper speaker/headphones would.
