Sweep sound in the beginning of It's My Life by Bon Jovi
I play in a Bon Jovi tribute band in New England, and I have pretty much all my sounds down except the sweep in the beginning and middle of It's My Life. From watching the videos, I can tell David Bryan isn't playing it, it's probably just a sample. Any idea how I can duplicate the sound with my Fantom-X8 or Fantom-S? Any help would be most appreciated.

Hey there. You wouldn't happen to play Club Meadows (western MA) once in a while do you? If so, I've seen you guys perform before..
Anyway, have you gone through the X8 factory presets for any kind of 'filter sweep' sounds? I'm sure I've come across some on the X.. then just modify the preset to suit your needs.
Then add the proper key or note of your filter sweep to a pad within a Performance, and you're set.
HTH.

Hi There Jovi Player!
I'm a huge Bon Jovi fan, and I dream about playing in a Jovi band someday!
Let me ask you a question: Does your guitar player uses a talkBox? If not, how do you you guys play Living on a Prayer? I've been trying to sample that talk box part, but the whole band is playing at that moment of the song, so it's quite difficult to isolate just that sound...
Cheers!

Actually, I played Club Meadows with them for the first time last month. If you saw us before that, it was probably with their old keyboardist.
I've looked through all the presets and a bunch of the sound banks online, and I haven't found the effect I need yet... I figured I'd need to add portamento, but I want something where I can just hold down one chord and have it sweep up about two octaves.
And, yes, our guitar player uses a talk box. I have a sound on my D-550 that does a pretty good talk box imitation, though. I think it was on the Keith Emerson Voice Crystal card.

Yep, I saw you guys perform last month
Cool.. You guys sounded good.
I perform in a cover band as well (The Whiskey Brothers). If you're ever free some weekend, it'd be fun to meet up and talk at a show during breaks, etc... (I'm using X8, XP-80, and v-synth XT on stage..)

dude, check this out
Hey,
I think I've figured this one out.. it involves some 'poor man' editing of a preset patch.
Check to see if you've got a Preset called "Bending Logo". This preset sounds like the beginning of a movie when the THX logo is shown. We can use this as the foundation of the sound, since it already has the 'sweep' built-in.
All I did was turn off all tones except for tone 4 (patch edit). Then scroll through the waves until you find one that suits you. I like wave 584 ("JD MetalWind"). It sounds pretty close to the recording.
Hope that helps.

jd and Jovi Player,
I manage and play keys in a classic rock band in northwest NJ and we also cover a few songs by Bon Jovi. Wanted Dead or Alive and Make a Memory are in our current set list.
We are currently working on Living on a Prayer. Any suggestions that you can offer for Living on a Prayer would be greatly appreciated. My synth gear for gigs includes a Fantom X-7, MKS-70 and MKS-20. For my home studio, I also have a JX-10 and Juno 60.

Ok, so I've had time to mess with it, and your solution works really well, but the pitch sweeps up too quickly. So, I messed with it a little more, and figured out that by changing the pitch envelope settings, you can extend the sweep, making it even longer, or through more notes.
I'll be trying it out tomorrow night at Maximum Capacity in Chicopee, MA if anyone's curious.
Thanks again for the response!

Hey man, nice to see some jovi fans out there! I play in a Jovi tribute band in Scotland- have messed around with this sound a fair bit and have something that's workable - drop me a line at david_rashbalm@hotmail.com and I'll try and help or send you over some samples- likewise to the guy looking for a prayer sound!

Our band (www.factorydefect.net), also in Western MA, does Living On A Prayer. Our guitarist does the talkbox (with the real deal) but I do the rest. I've got more splits on that setup than any other I think. Plus a second keyboard for more strings/layers.
Re: Sweep sound in the beginning of It's My Life by Bon Jovi
That's funny, there's another guy on this forum in a Bon Jovi tribute band.
Waynester is his nic.
You should look him up.

Hi Stoutmasterd, I tried what you suggested - and it worked, to a certain degree...
I have a Roland Fantom X7. as per your suggestion I am using Pitch envelope to try and recreate that pitch-sweep effect that we hear at the start of Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life”. The problem is the range of this sweep – apparently the -63/+63 range of “pitch envelope level” is not enough to cover the whole sweep required (which I believe goes beyond 2 full octaves). For the record, I already have “P-Env Depth” maximized at +12, but this fails to solve the problem.
Anyone has a work around this?
