audio mixer

Sorry for newbie style question but here goes:

I've recorded 2 audio tracks in a song, I want to mix their respective levels. I use the audio mixer to do this. Fine.

When I want to record these levels to the song, do I just hit record (in any track) and mix with the sliders - just wnted to check that I'm not about to overwrite an audio sample on a track if I have the audio input set to microphone still.....
