Stupid newbie sequencing questions

Hi all

Have been lurking around here for a few months since I bought my X8 in April.

I have now embarked into the world of creating songs for the fantom, and am trying to learn by "doing" (although I have read the manuals too). I have answered many questions for myself so far, but still have a few. These feel like stupid questions, because they are fairly fundamental, but I know you guys wont mind me asking, because you're always so helpful to beginners.

I have laid down a few tracks of a song so far. Let's say track 1 conssits of a piano part. It has taken a while to record it as it is fairly complex, so has involved some looping and punching in mix mode. All the notes are in place now.

Here's the first questions: I know I can edit the tempo of the song via the realtime tempo controller as the sequenced data is playing back, but can I also edit the velocity of a sequence in the same way? In other words, my piano track is OK, but I need to add in some dynamics - a few crescendos and subito piano moments, and not all of these were recorded as I was layering up the sequence in realtime.

I have managed to edit some chords in microedit, and understand how I can change the velocity of individual notes, but it would take an eternity to even arrange a single 8 bar gradual cresendo in this way - manually editing every note.

I also know I can use the "Change Velocity" command in Track Edit to change the velocity of a whole load of notes, but again, this isn't going to help me shape a dynamic that is continuously changing, is it?

Am I missing something really basic (apart from failing to record it in the first place?)

Hi Moray,
It looks to me like you've already named the options, although in Song Edit you can also change selected measures of notes all at once, as well as individually which is obviously too laborious, see P186 of the Manual.

For what you're trying to do it would be a lot easier to import the file into a seqencer on a PC, e.g. Sonar, Cubase, etc. where you can more easily see, select and change velocities for particular types or groups of notes. You can then transfer the song back to the Fantom if you wish.

While in Mixer mode, you can also record velocity changes in real time using the 4 control knobs. This way, you can listen to the velocity changes as they occur. This is the easiest and most realistic way that I have found to do it.

thanks for that. On reading the manual and other resources again, would I be right in thinking that you are referring to the situation where you make sure all the realtime control lights are unlit, and you are in mixer mode and you highlight the 4 tracks that you want to control with the knobs.

then you go into record mode, mix mode and obviously don't add any more notes, but use the knobs to control the velocity of the 4 tracks in realtime?

Does this sound right?

WHat is this option called in Fantom manual?
