Hi,
I have an X8 and Yamaha DT Explorer Electronic drums.
I put the MIDI cable from the Drums MIDI OUT to the X8 MIDI IN and....that's pretty much it!
It seems the pads from the drums always trigger the same 9 or 10 notes on the keyboard (eg I can play piano sounds with the drums via MIDI) but I am struggling to understand the manual and specifically, how to configure a snare drum sound to the snare drum pad, etc,etc..same for each X8 drum sound and each drum kit pad on the Yamaha.
I suspect this has to do with the creation of a rhythm set with sounds assigned to the righ key on the keyboard but I've been trying to figure this out from the manual for days and I suppose you forumers will be of precious help!
Yamaha DTExplorer electronic drum kit with X8/ MIDI headache
Re: Yamaha DTExplorer electronic drum kit with X8/ MIDI head
Hi!
I use X6 with a Roland TD-3KV drum set, and don't have any problems. I connect my drums via MIDI, switch to the performance mode, select channel 10 - and that's all. Hi-had pad is already set to hi-hat sound, snare pad - to snare and so on. I even use drums to trigger RPS patterns.

Re: Yamaha DTExplorer electronic drum kit with X8/ MIDI head
lucky you, but it's even more depressing! (-:
Thanks for the post anyway.
Note that most of the pads generate the correct sample on the X8. The toms and the cymbals are ok but the snare drum only triggers another tom sample, same for the bass drum.
Going back to your case, can you change the sample assigned to each pad?
I suspect it must be possible to create my own rhythm ensemble on the keyboard and assign any sound I like to any key (and by extension to any pad from the drums)
Any more thoughts, someone?

Re: Yamaha DTExplorer electronic drum kit with X8/ MIDI head
It sounds to me like the Yamaha is not sending the correct note number. Midi assigns a standard drum kit to particular notes. Acoustic snare is note 38. I'm not familiar with the Yamaha. I know that my roland drum brain allows you to change the note number assigned to a trigger.
There is probably a way to change this on the X8 as well but then the X8 will be non-standard for playing back midi files or hooking up other drum brains. See if you can change the note assignments on the Yamaha.

Re: Yamaha DTExplorer electronic drum kit with X8/ MIDI head
Surely I can. Any modern digital drumset must support assigning a note number for each pad (part of "MIDI settings"). In case of Roland TD-3, I use such a sequence:
Button EDIT -> NOTE# -> Hit the pad on which I want to change note number -> Use +/- buttons to set up a note number. That's all. I think that guys from Yamaha made a similiar procedure for DTX tuning, although I am not sure...
Another way is to edit a drum kit on Fantom. Make sure that option "MIDI Remote switch" (Menu -> System -> MIDI -> Receive) is set to "On". Then go to Patch mode and select a rhythm kit, then press Patch Edit. Now, when you hit the pad, a corresponding note will be selected on Fantom. Press "Pro Edit", select "Wave" tab and assign any samples/waves that you wish. Don't forget to write a kit after you have edited it.
