Post by breakbeatmonster »

Hi all!

Has anyone check thie DVD / Download tutorial of the FantomX. Is it good? Should I give 50 bugs (!JESUS!) for it?
Or is it "just" the owner manual in video with no good tips an backgroundinformation?!?!

If its the same dvd I owned it is very hard to follow and also very very boring. Go to rolandus site and download workbooks,I found these much more useful than Mr boring talking down to me like I was 6!!!

thanks guys.

maybe its just my way of learn things: audio-visual!
another problem: I'm not very patient...!

but you're right. 50 bugs is too much and i sould pull myself together and do this workbook and tweakbook-stuff!

The Roland workbooks are really easy reading and great info.

Also there are some short video clips on the Roland site that will give you ideas on how to use some of the Fantom's features.

I had been using the Fantom for almost a year and came across the short videos on the Roland site and got a few great tips out of them.

I have both DVDs and the official DVD is a lot better than Sudosonic DVD.

Sudosonic is VERY over-priced and the approach is very amateurish - for example, it takes the guy ages to find a string tone when demonstrating tones, as he obviously isn't really sure of what he is doing. Topics are glossed over, and things are not explained in enough detail. The things that are explained are done so through a low quality microphone, and in a superficial manner. Overall, not good enough for the money.

The official DVD on the other hand is much better - very professional and presented by a competent Fantom user (David Wills). It is an excellent starting point for new Fantom owners and if you own this DVD there is no need to purchase the Sudosonic DVD.

I wish I had known this before wasting over $75 on the Sudosonic tutorial!

Hope that helps :)

Again as I have posted elsewhere I had the official Roland DVD and sent it back I thought it was a waste of £15.
I respect sinergy point of view but I actually prefer the sudosonic tutorial. It isn't profesionally done but hey it's just a tutorial not a hollywood blockbuster! and the only reason I feel it's not professional is because you can see the camcorder in the screen of the fantom x he's using. sometimes he is a bit slow on a couple of things but all in all it is worth the money and it does include helpful info on the audio tracks which the offical DVD doesn't. You would think after nearly 4 years they would have updated the DVD to include the audio tracks.

Hey Solitary Man

I note that you said that you HAD the Roland DVD and sent it back. Where the he** did you get it? Roland UK have been telling me for 6 months solid that they don't have them in stock. Did you buy yours from the USA?

Hi Moray,
I got it from roland UK. They sent me an email to tell me they were in stock. I sent it back because I think it's lame compared to the Sudosonic DVD. It doesn't include the audio expansion either!
If your quick you might get my copy!

i have the fantom xr rack. i'm assuming the fantom x dvd will not apply to the xr so should i even bother about the dvd or any tutorials for that matter or should i get the dvd and just try to get what i know relates to the xr rack ?
i'm thinking maybe i should get the keyboard but the rack holds more sound cards. also how can i upgrade my rack to 2.0. it's up to 1.03 now but i can't get the software editor and other things to run on my mac to download more patches and upgrade it.

AVOID This DVD!!

Post by lilnyc »

I am a newbie, but I expected this to guide me to making a song.

1. The videos are BLURRY!!!!!
2. The labels o the DVDs are wrong. Disc 2 is Disc 1.
3. The voice is recorded on a low quality mic, but the chapter audio songs are loud and crisp.

I want to use the Fantom to layer instruments and make a song using Logic Pro. I don't expect that to be taught, however, I did expect to be able to at least learn to make a song on the Fantom G via this DVD. Instead, this DVD only seems to cover the features of the Fantom on a surface level. It's not thorough, and I got lost so often that I gave up. The instructor would sometimes mumble through functions and press buttons without saying where/which, as though he forgot or assumed we the viewer knew.

This is the type of DVD that should be on a Torrent site for free because there are better free videos on YouTube.

Sinergy - You are so right. It does seem like he's winging it through much of this.
