how to use midi thru
Re: how to use midi thru
disco,
If I am understanding your use of your setup, you are wanting to use the Motif as a sequencer to control the Fantom. You have the Fantom connected to the Midi Thru port on the Motif, Midi In on the Fantom, and have turned off the internal sound of the Motif.
I believe that your problem is a misunderstanding of the function of the Midi Thru port. The THRU port is a pass-thru of the MIDI IN port. Information received on the MIDI IN connector of a MIDI device is transmitted back out at the devices' MIDI THRU connector. Because you are simply playing the Motif, information is being sent out of the MIDI OUT port, and nothing is going out of the MIDI THRU port. The real function of the THRU port is to allow easier daisy-chaining of devices.
In other words, if you were sending info from the MPC in your current configuration, it would go to the MIDI IN of the Motif and be retransmitted to the Fantom via the THRU port.
The THRU port does not function as a second MIDI OUT port. It simply passes on the info received at the MIDI IN port to other devices down the chain.
I think that is why you are getting no sound.

Re: how to use midi thru
disco .. Going by what bassman said and by your request try one of these:
Motif Midi Out ==> Fantom Midi In
Fantom Midi Thru ==> MPC Midi In
OR
Motif Midi Out ==> MPC Midi In
MPC Midi Thru ==> Fantom Midi In
You will also need to ensure the MPC and Fantom are only receiving on the MIDI channels you wish to play their respective parts on.
hope this helps .. David
