well i bought the X8 today and I am not impressed
Re: well i bought the X8 today and I am not impressed
samrisio, I beleive the reason we love the sound and you don't is because you are hearing something very different to us which, hopefully, is just a cabling problem or something similar, and in light of Nathans explanation, best to get some balanced cables.
I did a quick check of the UB1832's block diagram in case the input channels had a phase reverse switch... but they don't.
Let us know how you get on.
Dave.

Nathan, I stand corrected... thanks for the explanation. I first started using balanced signals in my studio when I owned a Behringer MX8000. The Behringer mixers had (and I assume still do) electronically balanced inputs which they claimed allowed you to connect unbalanced signals with no attenuation (but obviously without the noise cancelling advantage of a balanced signal) and I assumed they achieved this by detecting the shorting of the sleeve and ring at the input. Also it didn't occur to me that the Fantom end of the cable wouldn't be doing the same thing. But you are dead right, use balanced cables where ever possible.

you guys have been great and thanks
but i still do not see how the piano would sound different than the other instruments all using the same cables? and other synths?

If you don't understand, then read over the posts again. They HAVE answered you question, and provided a number of possible explanations. Stop being lazy and READ.

Samrisio, I think I can relate to your problem and I believe the core of the problem is of very different nature:
Every keyboard I ever sold I have missed almost instantly and every time I plugged the new keyboard into my system, initially it sounded worse than the keyboard I replaced it with or worse than the keyboard I had listen to in the shop - so bringing home a new keyboard always had some depressing surprise to me. However, it wasn't after a few monhs of playing the new keyboard that it began to grow on me and suddenly it became my favourite piece.
But than, in my pursuit for the ultimate keyboard I sold it again, only to instigate the next cycle of initial shock mutating into bonding. Yamaha, Korg and Roalnd are all different and I can't find the ultimate amongst them - its sheer impossible.
So I believe the solution is simple: Never, ever sell your keyboards again!!! Hang onto them as you will miss them the day they leave your room!
NEXT, safe moneey and buy a Korg Extreme.
PS: My gues is that the day you exchange your Fantom for the Korg you immediately will miss the Fantom. I had all three (Korgs, Yamahas and Rolands) and all three got wonderfull aspects the other two don't have. I believe you are on an endless journey to find the ultimate machine amongst them.
So, hang onto your Fantom and buy a Korg for Xmas
Best wishes
Jost

Jost has a point here. Your ears grow accustomed to a certain sound. Exchange your keyboard and if it's a tad brighter you will initially feel it's too bright and vice versa. When you get used to the new sound you will feel the reverse way about the old one.
That said, I have to say that I too prefer the piano sound of my P200 over that of my X7. The P200 somehow seems to have more 'body' and more realism, I can almost feel the wood resonate. With the FX it feels like I'm playing a sampler. The P200 piano sounds better than the FX (imo) through headphones as well as speakers.

Samrisio, are you listening to a stereo out of the Fantom, or do you only have one cable between the Fantom and the Behringer?
Have you tried taking the output from the Phones out into the mixer??
What did you not like about the Extreme that made you want to get rid of it?
Why are the Pianos of the Roland so important if you already have the Yamaha?
Would an EQ tweak fix the problem??

extreme was too dance oriented but
i miss it now...will probable get another or wait for module..have not tried e'q ing fantom...going out from in and out jacks to mixer left and right..sounds thin in the middle...why should i have to EQ if the other sounds in the fantom sound the same as in the phones and the yamaha and triton sounded no different thru the mixer or the phones?

Can you go to a store and compare them again to double check? That's what I would do.
Samrisio...
"going out from in and out jacks to mixer left and right.."
I'm sure this was just a typing mistake or I am mis-reading what you meant, but just to be sure, did you mean you are connecting the Fantom L&R outputs to 2 mixer channels, one panned and one panned right... I only ask 'cos it sound like you meant you were connecting the Fantom "input" to a mixer channel.
This is not meant to be condescending or nasty, I'm just checking how you are connecting the Fantom to your mixer.
Did you manage to get new cables?

The reason I asked, is because going through the cans, you are going to get Stereo sound. Which will sound different, if you listen to it mono, especially if that mono is coming form the "R" jack. The "L" will give you a better sound, as it is normally designed to be used as mono.
The difference will be most notable on Piano, Organs, Phased Rhodes, and anthing else that takes advantage of the stereo spectrum.

Just a minor point but, perhaps a relevant one. Make sure you are not limiting the dynamics of your board by keeping the volume slider at too low. Roland used to print it in their manuals but I have not found it in the Fantom manual yet. Try cranking your fantom's volume slider all the way up, use a stereo volume pedal between your fantom and control your final feed to your amp/pa with the volume pedal or just use a max slider volume on the fantom and let the sound man control your final volume which in either case will be what happens anyway.
Point is, don't throttle the volume of your fantom at the volume slider, especially if you are sending a stereo signal cause there is alot more going on than the volume slider can throttle without a significant loss of overall quality. JMIO

Hi everyone
when i do gigs with both my FANTOM X8 and MOTIF ES7 i have both the volumes at just over 3 quarters... is that ok to do ? and give me the best quality sound ?
then i adjust my powered cabs accordingly... plus the front of house engineer has control as i`m feeding him a master mix from my own keyboard mixing desk
