No noise or delay between patches
Roland Canada's Reply
Oh, it seems that they don't know anything about that...
Greetings / Salutations!,
To be on the safe side, we recommend that you take the Fantom-X7 to your Roland dealer to have this investigated. For example, the Halifax Music Stop has Roland authorized technicians who can evaluate the keyboard. Our Service Centre can assist them to take care of any problem that is found. Please provide them with an accurate description of the problem (so that they can reproduce it on the bench), and a copy of the bill of sale if warranty is requested.
Best Regards / Sincèrement vôtre,
Roland Canada Music / Roland Canada Musique
@fanoftom
Can you give me detailed description of what Roland UK did on your keyboard, so I can ask Roland Canada do the same for me?

Re: No noise or delay between patches
Hi all.
MIDIguru: Yes, I'm sure they aren't changing the CPU itself. However, like computers, there's more to speed than just the CPU, such as the bus mastering processor ("chip-set" on PCs) and memory management unit (integrated on modern PC CPUs, but may not be on the Fantom-X). Without specific knowledge on the Fantom-X architecture, I can't speculate on exactly what they may update, but I agree with you in that it probably isn't the CPU itself as those take years to develop and any changes would probably not be released so soon after the release of the Fantom-X.

Re: No noise or delay between patches
Hi everyone , can you all tell me how to reproduce this problem because I have not experienced any slow ups and I've been pushing my fantom pretty far the only slow ups I get is when I'm loading tons of samples.

Re: No noise or delay between patches
Vintage Chyld,
While all effects are enabled, start playing on your FX(in patch mode). At the same time change patches. If you feel that there is almost "0" delay between switching the patch until it start sounding, it means that your keyboard doesn't have that problem.
Maybe this problem is just for the very first products.

Re: No noise or delay between patches
Hi and thanks Sam I just did it and no delay what so ever I even did it while the sequencer was playing 6 tracks and in mixer mode I was switching the patches , hmm maybe it could just be the earlier models by the way I think my FX was manufacterd in the beginning or mid of september. Now this is something you guys should really complain about a hardware issue is much more serious than a software issue,

Here's an Idea...
We need a way to compare this Patch Switching Delay phenomenon between our respective workstations, kind of like an "apples-to-apples" comparison. I propose that we get as many people as possible to do the following:
1) perform a factory reset
2) play the factory demo song
3) switch patches during playback from Ultimate Grand (PR-F009 UltimatGrand) to X Pure Grand (PR-F010 X Pure Grand)
4) hit skip-back sampling, save the file, edit it down to 10 seconds (5 seconds before the patch change and 5 seconds after) and up-load it somewhere for others to listen to.
This way we will all be able to listen to a true comparison between our respective workstations and finally determine if there is a difference in the delay during patch changes.
Better yet, instead of using the patches in step #3 (which are only found on the Fantom X units), why not use patches PR-F001 ConcertGrand, and PR-F002 Hall Concert) that way Fantom S owners can also participate. And maybe use a different song file instead of the demo song, just to keep everything standardized.
I have not tried this myself, but I was just thinking that there must be some way for us all to do a simple keyboard-to-keyboard equivalent test that will determine whether or not there is a difference. We would of course also probably need to keep track of operating system version and perhaps model number and serial number data.
Maybe this is to involved, What does everyone think? Is there an easier/better way to do this?

Roland US response
I just called RolandUS at the Keyboards/Samplers/Sound Modules support center, (323-890-3745) and spoke with a very helpful and competent Representative. I explained the problem of the fizzle and told him that Roland UK did something to fix it. Then asked if it would be addressed with software or hardware.
He placed me on hold and within a minute or two came back with a complete answer. The fix is a main board replacement. Apparently some but not all of the early Fantoms have an issue that Roland calls "Fault when switching sounds" (He said that the early Fantoms that they have at the Service Center didn't have this issue, so it took them while to recreate it.)
Anyway to get this issue handled you can call the above number or take your board to your nearest authorized service center and give them this Service Note number: 101811, (called "fault when switching sound") and have them call Roland US. Roland will send them a new main board for your Fantom and completely reimburse them for the replacement. No cost to you or them.
OR ship your keyboard to RolandUS for the repair. (From the website: If you would like to send the product to the Los Angeles factory, you must call our Customer Service department at 323-890-3700 ext. 2289 to obtain a return authorization number (RT) before the unit can be shipped to us. Customer Service will provide you with the shipping details at that time. )
I would like to add that I am impressed with Roland and their willingness to replace what sounds like the entire guts of the keyboard to correct this issue.

Re: No noise or delay between patches
Great!
So it's not a lack of processing power or poorly written software.
It's a few bad components on the mainboard that didn't get caught when the product was tested at the factory in Japan.

Patch Delay
Oh Man thank god that this problem has been resolved.
I bought one of the first FX and could not take the delay between patchs and returned it.
Now I can go and buy one again.

Patch Delay Test
Hi all.
Thanks very much Tim for the complete information. I may, after all, get this repaired if it is something that Roland US acknowledges as a real problem.
jcthemc: Yes, this "spring reverb" thing is a component of what we're talking about as well as a rather noticeable delay when switching patches from one patch to another where the MFX algorithm is switched.
Still Learning: I like the way you think.
I created a standard SVQ file that can be used on both the Fantom-S and Fantom-X and will switch patches for you in Patch mode to demonstrate the delay while playing back a simple arpeggio. I also recorded the results of playing this sequence on my Fantom-X8 (OS 1.03) and saved the skip-back sampled (and normalized) WAV file for all to hear.
The SVQ:
http://www.nathansheldon.com/fantom-x8/ ... HTST01.SVQ
The WAV result:
http://www.nathansheldon.com/fantom-x8/ ... R90368.wav
My Procedure:
1) Perform a factory reset (after backing up existing data). Press MENU, select Utility, Select F3 (Factory Reset) and confirm. Turn off the FX and back on again.
2) Load the SVQ file with the sequence (above) into USER storage area (Using USB Storage mode). Press MENU, select USB Storage, press F3 (Internal) and plug USB cable into computer. Drag SVQ file to FANX USER/ROLAND/SEQ/SNG folder and eject FANX USER disk. Press EXIT on Fantom-X. Press SAVE/LOAD. Press F6 (Load Song). Find the "PatchDelayTest1" song in the list and press F8 (Load) and F8 (Exec) to confirm.
3) Play the sequence, being ready to press the SKIP BACK button as soon as playback is complete. Press the PLAY button.
4) As soon as the PLAY indicator goes off, press the SKIP BACK button. Cancel the assign to pad screen (F7, Cancel).
5) Normalize the sample. Press F3 (Sample Modify) then F3 (Normalize). Press F6 (Over Write) then F8 (Exec) and F8 (Exec) again to confirm.
6) Once complete, copy the sample to your computer. Press EXIT to go to the main Patch Play screen. Press MENU. Select USB Storage and then F3 (Internal). Connect the USB cable to your computer. Copy the "smpl0001.wav" file in the FANX USER/ROLAND/SMPL folder to your computer's hard drive. Eject the FANX USER disk.
Post your WAV file online somewhere. Please BE SURE and tell us which Fantom you're using and ...importantly... which OS you're using for your Fantom.
If you do not have a place to put your WAV file for sharing with everyone on the Internet, you can e-mail them to me at
me (at) nathansheldon (dot) com
and I will make them available on my web site and provide links to them. I'll only be able to do this for about 20 people though.
[EDIT] I changed to URL to the WAV file above to match the new naming convention for all samples demonstrating this bug. [/EDIT]

Now we are cooking with gas kids. This is what we should be doing with this valuable asset that Artemiy gives us access to. Nathan you are soon to become the next professor fantom if you keep this up. Dang, I miss the professor. Wish he would at least say hello. Thanks to all that supplement this truly priceless opportunity. JMIO
