I bought my X8 on eBay for $1999.
I love it.
Hell yes I would buy it again!
Would you buy your Fantom X again?
I hate Obsolete!!!
Rather than the latest and the greatest,Roland should make different keyboards ,that do different things ,one not being better than the other.
I hate obsolete, hopefully Roland will keep making stuff for the FantomX

"I love my X6, but wouldnt buy another one
would rather get a good midi controller and then go with soft synth modules . I am pretty much done buying keyboards. I am sure in the near feautre we will have complete pc workstation with keys exclusive for music production, korg oasys was almost there."
The future is here my man. www.openlabs.com I own the Miko and it's really amazing! I love the touchscreen, I literally have hundreds of synth plugins. Some are incredible and some are not. I run Cubase 4 and have tons of flexibility. This isn't an ad, I'm just sayin'.

Mimik: Looks very interesting on the Niko/Miko..
It allows you to directly clone any synth/instruments with all the original dynamics of every note.
really!! Cool!

A great instrument is NEVER obsolete. What you do with it is what counts. I mentioned this in another thread about so-called obsolescence. Is a 1967 Les Paul obsolete? Of course not! And neither is a Juno 106 or Oberheim Matrix 12!! "Old" does NOT mean obsolete. A Stradivarius is by NO means obsolete. Damnit, we are MUSICIANS, not Air Force pilots! You take ANY good synthesizer no matter how "old" and find new ways to create new sounds! Musicians STILL use Jupiter 8, Oberheims, Junos, Korg M1, K2000, Kawai K5000, Moogs, Prophets, D50, D70, Crumars, etc. etc.
I used to think instruments became obsolete at one time. I thought that the newest was the best. I have learned that our instruments are our brushes and paints. I do not understand this infatuation with this perceived "need" to constantly upgrade. The perfect studio is a good mix of old AND new. You find what works for you and you work it. You make music! I made the awful mistake years ago of unloading a Matrix 6, a DW8000, M3R, SC Six Trak, and a number of other instruments. I miss the tone colours and timbres of those instruments and would love to add them to my palette of sounds.
As for obsolescence, I suppose my whole setup would labelled obsolete by those who require the newest toy.
Fantom X8 w/Audio Tack Expansion, Classic EPs and 544 MB sample ram
Fantom FA76
Kurzweil K2000
Korg Wavestation EX
Roland Juno 106
Roland SH-32
Yamaha TG-33
Boss DDR 770
Fostex MR-8HD
Peavey KB/A 300
Yamaha RX
Every single one of these tools would be considered obsolete, yet, I can create amazing patches, performances, and music with this humble gear.
Would I like to have an OASYS? Hell yes!! But I do not have a spare 8000.00 lying about. I am a professional magician as well, and that too requires money. There is no effect in Magic that is obsolete, and there is no instrument that is obsolete in and of itself.
However, if anyone has an obsolete Matrix 12, 6, Xpander, etc., they wish to get rid of because it is useless, then ship them to me. I will pay the shipping
Best,
Vlad

Re: Would you buy your Fantom X again?
I think what makes something obsolete is very small minds
I look at the fantomx and i can still see its potential for music and sound creation. Its all there just waiting to be tapped.
however alot of people either dont have the time or are just lazy and want everything to be done with the touch of a button.
People say the fantom is just a rompler..
I say to people like that.. (you obviously have not learned your gear)
people say its sound is out dated. (?? how can a sampler/synth be out dated?)
Now i agree it could be more efficient in many places but if we try hard to overlook its short comings and bugs it still has the ability to allow you to create whatever you can imagine.
so if its obsolete then so is your imagination..

Re: Would you buy your Fantom X again?
I'd purchase again, but probably the G series by now.
1.What do you love
The smooth portamento, the nice feel keyboard, the light weight (compared to other 76 note keyboards). 16 parts in performance mode.
2.What do you miss?
4 direction joystick, i.e. downwards movement. Top quality reverb and EQ effects.
3.What do you hate?
Only 64 user performances and 256 user patches - far too many presets nowhere near enough user patches. USB midi doesn't work at the same time as midi connectors either.
4.What do you recommend now?
I recommend people buy what suits them because I've got an assortment of keyboards and they're good in different ways.
5.Is the actual lower price attractive or the Fantom G or a Motift XS the better choice?
Depends what you want... To me I need easy live performance, controller keyboard style, with some sampling.
Mike.
