Problem: mixer moves on its own

Post by beatbopper »

I bought a used X6 a little over a week ago. I updated it to 2.1 from 2.02, loaded the RAM to max, and bought a 1GB compact flash card. When I noticed strange behavior I did a factory reset and even downloaded the 2.1 update and re-updated the OS. Problems persist. Here's the prob:

Sometimes when I turn on the x6 the grand piano patch that loads at startup has a weird synth sound with a volume swell. After playing a while sometimes a chorus effect is added to all patches. And most annoyingly, controls such as volume, pan, reverb, and chorus move on their own in the performance mixer. This really stinks. I can just sit and watch the knobs and faders moving on the screen like they are possessed. This has been reported elsewhere on the forum but I couldn't find any helpful advice. PLEASE HELP ME OUT. This thing is basically useless until I can get this straightened out. Thanks a lot.

Sounds like you have some dodgy hardware. I'd investigate the possibility for a refund, if possible.

BTW OS 2.10 is the latest version. Which is not the same as 2.01 or possibly 2.1. I think you have the right one, but just to make sure...

Sounds scary ...

You need to call Roland.

Where did you get the Fantom? If it was a bricks-and-mortar music store, I'd ask for another board until yours gets dealt with.

Keep the faith.

I have the same problem. Is there a way to fix this myself? I have repaired other boards before (xp-10, sy...) but this is a $1600 board, so Im afraid...

I bought the keyboard used, but the original owner bought it from GC with the 3yr performance guarantee. I brought it in to GC today and they just gave me a number to call. I called and am now waiting two to three business days for them to call me back and tell me where to take the keyboard for repair. Very frustrating.

I think that the problem is with the control knobs. They seem to be sending random information even when I don't touch them. I might be able to get around this by telling the performance parts to ignore the control knobs (through the control settings menu), but trying to work around the defects in a keyboard this expensive is too depressing, so I am not even going to mess with the keyboard until I get it fixed.

okay, so I'll be opening this little one next sunday. Im tired of this. Wish me luck... it should be easy, the worst part is taking everything apart (hate that, lots of screws).

Just wondering. Are you certain that you are not turning any knobs, even the volume until the system is completely booted? Have you tried turning ALL knobs to the lowest setting, turning the machine off and then restartiing without moving ANYTHING until the machine is fully booted?

did this happen before you updated
did you do a backup before update
did you do a backup after update

because if you did your flash card will load all settings on load up

try factory restore without the flash card in

Its the KNOBS, I have the same problem. I called Roland and each knob cost about five dollars plus s/h, which isnt nothing. Im just afraid to open it up and mess something else up.

bezerk,

It had crossed my mind that it could be due to the OS update, although, I had the keyboard less than a week when I updated, so it's hard for me to say whether or not the problem existed before update. I certainly didn't notice it before I updated, but I hadn't done a whole lot with the keyboard before I updated. I re-updated through USB which didn't help. I then re-updated using campact flash card to see if that made a differnce; no luck. I contacted the original owner and he said that he only had the keyboard for four or five months and only used it in patch mode. He said he never had any problems with it. It could be due to the update, but there is nothing I can do about it now. I am not going to mess with it until I can have it serviced.
