XR Newbie looking for starter essentials

Post by kayvon »

Wuddup peeps, just taken delivery of a Fantom XR and I thought i'd just post to say hello and also see if there were any essential downloads or general advice to help me enjoy my new ROMpler.

I've already got Jason Carroll's organ emulator downloaded, will be interesting to hear that to accompany the SRX-12 I should be getting soon. I'm also gonna check out the Fantom Tweakbook when I get a chance.

Right then, i'm gonna have a gander through the faq and maybe try some sampling, hopefully those loading times won't bug me too much...

Cheers,
Pete.

Well... the first thing is to setup FX editor and librarian on your computer and then hook it up to the machine.
Eventhough, the program does not give you total control of the machine, it will help you a lot.
Another thing is to familiarize with the display screen functions. It is hard to read in some cases but there are many sub menus and function screens in relation to different features.
Sampling is cool feature but start out with samples that does not need looping(percussion sounds, etc.) Looping is tedious if you are not familiar with fxr menus.

Hi dkpcola, gonna be setting up the fx editor/librarian as soon as I find a new spot for my pc as it had to make way for the Fantom XR ;-)

Shame the editor does not give you total control although so far i've found the XR's screen to be quite manageable.

So the looping is a little tedious? I think i'll start off with some drum hits as you suggest before I try and find some loopable brass stabs.

Thanks for the tips mate, any other things I should know about peeps?

I haven't tried anything with my computer yet. What kind of connector do I need to connect from the Fantom to my computer?

You will need USB cable. You need to install the FX software on your computer. Make sure your computer USB ports are functional and it doesn't have too many USB drivers(especially legendary USB drivers). USB port conflict is the major headache for many. After installing the software and reboot, you will see FX as USB device in window system.

Wow, I'm just going through some of the effects with a DX200 fm ep (not quite that patch!) plugged in and I have to say i'm impressed. Only tried a couple of the most interesting Roland ones like infinite phaser, space chorus, 3D chorus and 3D delays but so far i'm really liking the sounds. The 3D chorus didn't really seem to be too noticable but the delay was great and really sounded like it was coming from either side of my ears. Didn't notice any vertical placement though.

Will be interesting to chain those MFX in performance mode, I don't regret getting rid of my Lexicon MPX-550 today at all.
