Does anyone use stock drum kits?
Does anyone use stock drum kits?
Hi everyone, i'm just wondering if anyone here use the drum kits comes with fantom x? or any drum kits from expansion board and which one, SRX-05? or drum samples?

Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
I find Fantom-X studio kits really great, and there are lots of rnb/hip-hop drum sounds too. If you're looking for some more sounds, I'd suggest you have a look at Rhythm Galaxy vol. 1, it has loads of rnb and neo soul drums/percussion as well as some oldschool stuff.
Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
i just bought srx-5 and srx-9 and i still use the stock drums sounds from my fantom s. i don't use the preset drums kits though. i go into waveform and create my own kicks and snares by layering different waveforms together. it may take a while to build up your own drums kits but i think it's fun and a good way to be creative and come up with new sounds.
Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
thank you Artemio and Lj.
Lj what do you think of srx-5 drum kits? do many kits fit well with hip hop and rnb sounds or just a couple of drum kits? I do a bit of tweaking myself on stock drums too. And i got a big drum sample library from akai and other waves sample on my hardrive. but i find it does not sound right when i import the sample to my fantom x. I think i haven't done it correctly. it should not be that way.
your input on srx-5 drum kits is very much appreciated. thank you!
cheers!

Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
I make only Hip Hop and R&B. I only use the stock Fantom Percussion sounds (Cymbals, bells, FX, etc). I have made 15 custom Drum kits spread over all 61 Keys. These are the drum sounds that I used when I had my MPC. The stock drum sounds on the Fantom are weak in my opinion for Hip hop. But I have made some bangers off of them and I know people who have made bangers and love the stock drum sounds.
Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
I tend to agree with tjudge about the stock kits being a bit weak, especially for hiphop/r&b or for that matter any style that uses really chunky drums in general. they're not bad, but the preset patches are really leaning more toward real sounding acoustic drums that just don't have the punch. the few electronic oriented kits do have some pretty nice hits, especially if you layer one of the punchy kicks with an acoustic to get the lightweight attack of the acoustic. obviously some degree of this is objective, and another depends on your monitoring system.
i'd be interested in hearing some compare/contrasts of some of the better kits (both stock and user created) based on the standard fantom samples as well as the expansion boards. as far as any expansions go, if i ever use any it would definitely be percussion first.

i think the drums sounds on the srx-5 are pretty good. the 808 kits are much better than the stock ones on my fs. for hip hop i think some of the drum sounds may be a little thin on it's own but theres a ton of drum sounds on the board so if you experiment with layering drums you can come up with some banging drums. the platinum tracks expansion board has fatter drums sounds in my opinion and doesn't need much tweaking. that's another board you might want to look into as well.

Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
thank you Lj for your inputs. I am going to check out the platinum tracks expansion.
thank you ums for your opinions.
after reading all this, i am going to hold on my plan of buying any expansion board for adding more drums, except for the ultimate keys expansion board (i must get this :_)). I am going to go back and learn more on layer drums from the stock drums kits. hopefully a week or two from now, i can create some nice drums, well, i hope!
thank you all once again everyone!
cheers!

Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
one more thing. if you haven't done so you can also set up your mastering effect and mfx so they are built around your drums. i always work in performance mode and i use low boost, eq, and limiter as my three mfx and i make sure to get a good sound out of my drums first and work the other sounds around that. some sounds obviously won't sound as good if you route it to the mfx but the good thing is you have separate reverb and chorus and you can use delay in your chorus effect so some of your sounds don't really need to be routed to the mfx. just run them through reverb and chorus if you want and you always have the tvf filters to help shape your sounds if needed. just something else to think about.

Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
I've used stock drum sounds (not kits) and edited kits, to make my own kits and made some 100ish loops with it. Using effects, pitching, panning, resampling and then mangling the loop are some ways to get good drum loops.
And as for the expansion, for christ's sake, DONT BUY the expansions for drum sounds. If its drum sounds you want, there are TONS of them free on the net, or you could chop up some from free loops, or buy good quality sample drum CDs for cheapish prices. If you buy any SRX for drums, you're throwing away money. jmio.

If at first you dont succeed, then skydiving is definitively not for you.

Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
FWIW, Eric Persing (creator of the Spectrasonics company) created much of his "Metamorphosis" loops using just rebirth. Ofcourse there's adding effects and many techniques involved, but think about the fact that he used rebirth (which is now free) to create a loop-library. Its all in the techniques, methinks.

what you said above would take me months and perhaps year to master. I did a quick tour on the effects and get some sort of ideas and lots of "what is this one" and "how" questions. I won't ask many stupid questions yet until i confuse myself with all the questions.
i am really enjoying the fantom x ...
thank you guys!
cheers!

Re: Does anyone use stock drum kits?
the fantom is made to make your own drum kits from hot samples u buy off sample cd companies that sell high quality samples, the user stuff is just for demo purposes i think, the fantom is made to make it your own, at least thats what i think after using it for a year
