I don't know how to play piano.....

Post by thunderkyss »

Art..... would it be too much to start up a section of fantomized.info to discuss playing technique??

Would anyone else be interested??

Or does any one know of a good site for self taught keyboard players??

I've never learnt to play with a teacher either ;-) But hey I can play something now, after 12 years of self-training and looking at how the real guys do it ;-)

I like that idea!

I am classically trained and, for about 10 years, was so turned off by it, refused to even touch a piano.

Then, a situation arose forcing me to have to play and I haven't looked back.

However, I would love to learn new stuff such as chord combinations for specific genres such as Blues or Jazz, or genre rhythms such as Rock or Swing.

I have found sites relating to such, but they are geared to those who have a good, solid base in the first place and I am a Newbie in so many areas of the music world.

So, yes, I would like to see such a site here or to be directed to sites that would be beneficial for beginners to experts (beginner for me now, expert for later - in my dreams).

for absolute beginners only.

my friend is trying to force me to learn how to play my fantom/towel rack. I've pretty much given up ( i know a computer keyboard, how difficult could this possibly be? ) a case of more money than skill/talent or perseverance.

Pick a piano patch for now (or any sound you like)

Use your index finger.

Find 'middle c' on your keyboard

from there, mentally identify the D, E, G, and A keys.

Feel free to use labelled "stick it" notes (carefully)

now, count 1 per second. that's the tempo to use (no need learn how to set the clickety maker built into the fantom)

Here is what you will play, one note per second:

E
G
A
(pause an extra second)

E
G
D
(wait only half a second)
A
(pause an extra second

E
G
A
G
E

pat yourself on the back, it is possible to learn to play music.

Sami........ thanks for that lesson........

If I can play it on guitar, I can figure it out on Piano...... but, piano parts played like guitar parts don't quite sound right.

Piano chords have so many variations compared to Guitar, it gets a little daunting..... how do you know which version to play??

I start off by not moving my hands too much, I'll play different inversions so I can stay in the same "position". Of course, using my ear, some inversions don't sit right.

I'm sure this is along the right idea, and more than likely I'll get better with time.

But I'd like to discuss playing the piano........ why this version sounds better than that one. Why comping this way works for this style, but can be used in that style....... etc... wierd things like that.....

What you like about certain songs, all kinds of stuff..... about playing.

I'd definitely be interested in section dedicated to piano/kb method/technique. Seems related enough, doesn't it?

Piano Lesson 1,2,3 method

Post by da-man »

Easy Piano Technique

Double the Bass notes (octave apart) with the left hand using your thumb and pinkey.

Now play any of the 3 inversions of the chord with your right hand.

EASY, EASY, EASY

I use this method the most when playing in bands or for backing with a singer.

To add colour to the sound use a lot of 2nds and 4ths (notes of the major scale) to vary your chord sounds.

Practise, practise, practise. Play a chord and slide it all up a half step. Then you can learn to play in any key by sliding every shape up half steps (each note of the chord to the next note)

I'm telling you that piano is no harder then guitar using this method but like guitar you need to practise a lot so it becomes easy and you don't have to think about it.

Hope that helps.

thunderkyss I learned to play piano that way.

I started off playing single notes in left and right hand. Then I worked out I could double those notes using the thumb and pinky to play octaves. But it was all pretty basic and limiting.

THEN

My older brother showed me the basic c chord (c,e,g) and I worked out I could slide each finger up a key and get the next chord.

Okay I was a kid when I started this and I learned inversions on my own without anyone showing me anything. I just worked out you could play the same notes starting on the c, or the e, or the g

If you heard me play now you would think I would have had lessons for a long time. I just tinkered on the piano till I got it to sound good and I could sound like I knew what I was doing.

I still reckon I can teach anyone to play who is willing to practise.

Hi all,

I think it would be a great idea to have a 'techniques' section, which could including playing styles/ piano technique and other techniques for music production. I know detracts from the 'Fantom' aspect of fantomized, but it could be very helpful for a lot of users.

For instance for us into loops etc, how to write good breaks/beats and good bassline sequences. Perhaps even sections on good chord progressions people know or other such material.

You could even try break it down into basic genres of music.

Could be helpful when know the sound you want but you cant quite get it (as opposed to buying it from someone else)

Just a thought :0)

Right now, they're discussing piano techniques in www.musicplayer.com. (forums) They're actually discussing jazz techniques, but you can learn stuff from that as well.

don't underestimate scales ... the crazier, the better ... and try to involve both hands as much as possible ... start simple ... and then try and get crazy ... eventually, if you stick with it EVERY DAY, (even just for 10-15 minutes) you'll be a lot closer to where you want to be ...

I've been focusing on improving my technique lately, and I'm by no means the most talented pianist anywhere, but I must say, practice really does pay off and I feel like I'm actually starting to get somewhere ...

BTW, I've been doing everything the afformentioned posts have mentioned ... it's the logical, natural progression ...

While it's all good, I think the real leap to greatness or sem-greatness, comes when you can balance the pleasing/tonal (easier) chords with the more challenging/atonal ones ... I think the concept of resonance figures in mightly, too ... how those chords linger and affect the new notes ... that's something I'm trying to investigate and work on now ...

it's all great stuff ... the main thing is to just sit in front of that board and keep going like the energizer rabbit ... when your wrists start to hurt, that's when you know you're onto something ...

I also love to set skip-back sample to 40 seconds and periodically review my "jams" just to hear how they REALLY sound out of the moment ...

Sustain pedal!!!!

Sorry, I forgot to mention what separates playing the piano from sounding very beginnish to very pleasing to the ear is the sustain pedal.

Unless you are playing some choppy blues, or some hard stabbing chords then all I do and recommend to anyone is hold that sustain pedal down until they need to change chords etc...
