A few questions
A few questions
Hello, I really want the fantom x6 but i have a question (More to come)
Can I make drum sounds on the fantom x synthesizer and then put them on the drum pads to play?
And, are there alot of drum kits already in the fantom x's?
Thank you,

Re: A few questions
Okay, more questions.
Straight out of the box...
1. How long can I record midi on the fantom x?
2. How many midi-only songs can I store?
3. Lets say I made a sound on the synthesizer, can I save that preset?
4. If I made a bunch of drum kits, how many can I store?
5. How long can I resample?
Thank you very much,

1. How long can I record midi on the fantom x?
A: It may depend on the amount of memory installed and where you're storing files (I have a Fantom S). You can also Xfer the songs off your Fantom onto your PC.
2. How many midi-only songs can I store?
A: Same as #1
3. Lets say I made a sound on the synthesizer, can I save that preset?
A: Yes.
4. If I made a bunch of drum kits, how many can I store?
A: You can store drum kits. See #1 A for storage capacity.
5. How long can I resample?
A: For me on the Fantom S this is a function amount of memory installed. Fantom S has 32M (40- sec.); I upgraded to 288M for over 3 min . sampling.

Re: A few questions
Thank you very much...Another question
Recording midi on the fantom x isn't the same as resampling, right? It's just like regular midi information, and I can store more of that?

Re: A few questions
midi data is way smaller than wav files.....which is what I think you mean by resampling.
Look at it like this.......lets say you have a sample that says "Smoke Club is the hottest group ever"
in audio terms, that sample is a few seconds long so lets estimate it at about 1MB of data. To store this info somewhere, it has to take up a MB of data. But what if you want to use the sample 10 times in this song and then 2 times in like 8 other songs. Without midi, you'd have to place the 1MB of info all over the place.....thus taking up much more space with the sample.
WITH midi, you only have to have that sample info stored ONCE. using MIDI, you can TRIGGER the sample to play at a certain time with a certain source pitch. All midi is, is an INSTRUCTION for the synth to trigger that sample at a time and pitch of your choosing. The data required to make that instruction happen only requires mere KB's rather than that big MB that the sample is using.
As a result, since the board already has the sample data stored in it. The only data that you're adding is instructions for the board to initialize a patch when you've told it to.
Now the fantom comes with 32 MB's of user storage. I'm not sure how much recording you do, but a 4 minute wav file song is going to ding you for about 40 MB....roughly 10 MB per minute is good general ratio.......if the fantom only has 32, then right there you know that you can't store more than a 3.5 minute audio song........however since it's midi data that you're storing instead, you can easily store a couple hundred different compositions of music on your user storage, provided you don't fill your board up with wav files from samples you want to use.
But then you can also buy extra storage devices as well and expand on the 32....and it takes a while to fill up 32 MB with midi data anyway.

Re: A few questions
Resampling is recording Audio data. Midi is not audio. It is digital information.
To clarify your first question on your previous post, you are limited by the amount of Midi data recorded, not how long you can record Midi. The Fantom X will record up to 400,000 notes. You are limited to a Song length of approximately 10,000 measures. If you add other Midi data such as Hold messages, Program Changes, Sysex, etc., your capacity will be affected.

Re: A few questions
Wow, thanks for the info.
So, if I wanted to record a song, lets say with the piano sound on the fantom x, then I could record a pretty long song right?
Also, Do I have to resample to put my samples on the pads? Like if I made a kick-drum sound on the synth, can I store it as a patch, so it doesnt take as much space? or do I have to turn it into a .wav?
Oh, and for future references, so I can get started fast, how do I record midi on the fantom x.
...I will have a fantom x soon enough...

Re: A few questions
not to sound like a dick, but you hit the record button and start playing the notes.
*make sure you're in performance mode and not patch mode though.* Otherwise, you'll run into patch assignment problems when you expand on your composition.

Re: A few questions
and you can make the song just about as long as you want it too.
I make songs that are 4-5 minutes all the time on the sequencer. you can go much longer than that too. You could seriously score a symphonic piece on the board.

Re: A few questions
and you can save the new drum kick as a patch if you want. If you synthesize a drum sound, you're basically using sound material that's already in the board so all the sample data is there, you've just tweaked the parameters.
Personally, I haven't done this. I haven't gotten into synthesizing drum sounds, so I don't know the exact method, but you can save the drum sound as a user patch if you wanted.....but if you resampled it, you could have it in user storage, then you would be able to go into PATCH EDIT and insert the drum sound in any kit you wanted.
Sorry, I'm answering these backwards.

Re: A few questions
google,
You can always go out to the Roland site and download the manual to get a head start on things. Then you could ask questions based on what you didn't understand from the manual, which would be more useful to you when you got your box.
