Sampling from a CD
Sampling from a CD
The sample CD that came with my X8 plays the samples on a cd walkman player, therefore the sampleas must be in audio format (i think its *.dca or something like that).
The manual talks about the samples coming in as wave files.
What gives, do I have convert the CD samle files to wave files before sampling them in? If so can someone please advise how I can do this. Also, if you have to do this, why is it not stated anywhere in the manuals.
Sorry for such a basic question.
Thanks

You'll need an audio ripper to convert your audio tracks to .wav files. I use the save tracks function of Nero Burning ROM, but there's a lot of freeware applications available that can do the same. FreeRip, for instance.

Re: Sampling from a CD
Steve, I received a sample CD with my XR purchase and I believe it stated somewhere on the package that is intended for audio listening onlyas a demo. The idea being I believe to get you to buy their actual product. The typical audio format is a .wav file same as on a PC for digital audio processing and I imagine most purchased sample files would already be in that format, and possibly other more specialized forms. But as Don has already mentioned you can rip the CD format to a .wav file format.

Re: Sampling from a CD
If you've got the right cables or adapters, you can simply plug your Walkman into the audio inputs of the Fantom, play out and capture the live audio feed as a sample directly into memory (or as an audio track if you've got OS2).
Even without OS2, you can still basically sample anything your Walkman can play, chop up the samples to get just the sounds you want off the CD and save them as samples (e.g. wav files). They are then accessible to assign to pads or keys and use, modulate, etc.
Cheers!

@david
You said that you "...received a sample CD with my XR purchase and I believe it stated somewhere on the package that is intended for audio listening only as a demo. The idea being I believe to get you to buy their actual product."
I don't have a Fantom yet so I'd like to get a better idea of "How the patches really sound", that's why I wrote an e-mail to Roland where I tried to have Roland send me a CD with sound samples or something similar (see as well my thread to this toppic in the "Sound Section", if you like): Where can I test-hear (all) Fantom-X sounds?
They told me, "there is no such CD with samples of the Fantom patches that they could send me"... Seems that there is one after all!
- How many MegaBytes is this CD?
- Is there a way for me to get that CD or do I have to buy a XR first
@all XR owners:
I'd be glad to receive the files converted to MP3 at least... May some via email? Or isn't it worth the effort at all? (I mean the content of the CD, not the XR...)
regards!

Re: Sampling from a CD
Hi SRUT, sorry to disappoint you but the demo CD included with the XR was just a demo of what samples (as short audio snippets of music) you can buy from Ueberschall called Sample Show. Value=Zero except for the jewel case which I am now using to store my Fantom Editor CD in

Re: Sampling from a CD
hi dave,
thanx for the info, I thought it was a original ROLAND CD...
so, it seems that I have to BUY a Fantom to get a deeper look into the abilities of the X... (well. okay, I've already been to my "nearest" store (which is 70 km away...), but only had time for a quick 1 hour glance at the beast...)
regards!

Re: Sampling from a CD
SRUT, take a listen to some of the tunes folks have posted on the site (http://forum.fantomized.info/?action=show_all&fid=14). You might be able to get an idea of what to expect.

Re: Sampling from a CD
Hi JEB,
thanks for the tip, that's what I am already doing every other day! The only prob is, that people of this forum do not only have a Fantom-X to make music with, but lots of other gear as well! So it's rather difficult to say how a single F-X sounds like...
But soon, I will know - I hope. I think, I might wait until until the NAMM 06, not really expecting that Roland will pull out something mega-ultra-super-duper-new for the F-X, but I will have to wait anyway, since other things have to be bought first (stuff for 2 kids, one house etc...)
shrewd-salut!
