Fantom for Hip Hop?

Post by Product »

Aight fellas. I got the Fantom X6. The only concern I have is the sounds are not all that great for hip hop. This is my specialty. I got warned by a co worker not to get it for this purpose. He stated its not really god for hip hop. What do you guys think? I made some good songs with the X6 but sometimes I get annoyed with the sound selection.

I think the Fantom is good enough for hip-hop. I've got an FS. I don't do hip-hop, but the potenetial is there. Don't just play the patches as-they-are. Experiment with pitch, and maybe some patch editing too, and MFX's.

And/or get a drumbox (MC-909 or something? I dunno) and control it via Fantom perhaps.

Yea, Maybe I should tweak the sounds up a bit too. I have yet to figure out how to mess with the patch edit.

In the realtime control the Filter/Env, ARP/RHY, and Assignable should not be selected.

I use the Fantom in my beats all the time. While I don't use the Fantom's sequencer, as I use my MPC4000's sequencer as the primary sequencer, the Fantom's edit mode for patches and sounds is sick. You can make plenty of sounds by combining different waveforms, playing with ASDL envelopes, etc. Especially if you're into mainstream beats, you got all the sounds you'll ever need. Trust it.

yeah if your willing to get your hands dirty and experiment with layering and editing waveforms and effects believe me, you can come up with new sounds that will allow you to take hip hop into the future and become a trendsetter. all you need is to learn the fantom and use your imagination.

After you've got the basics of editing patches, consider checking out Artemio's Fantom-S/X TweekBook 3.0 as well. It's free (though you can order a printed version as well) and available at http://artemiolabs.com/pub/books/fantom-tweakbook/. With some creativity, you can come up with some real unique sounds.

Fantom for Hip Hop? ABSOLUTELY. I must say that I am taken back a bit from the question and the reluctance to not make your own sounds for hip hop. Especially nowadays. Where would Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Rick Rubin, Jermaine Dupri, Lil Jon & The Neptunes be without making their own sounds.? Like the dark master Phait and some others, I am interested in the darker side of music but can't help but keep up with what is currently going on with pop, r&b and hip hop music. As discussed many places, hip hop producers break the mold constantly and reinvent themselves over and over again.

Thinking about the Fantom specs for hip hop:

- Great filters for that dirty, rough sound.
- Very capable drum machine / sequencer (I could elaborate)
- Add to that MPC type pads - no brainer here.
- Realtime time stretching. (elasticity in loops if you will)
- SRX boards with hip hop material available.
- Skip back sampling. (for musical accident inspiration)
- On board effects for Lo - fi processing.

Congratulations on your purchase of the Roland Fantom X. We look forward to seeing your name as one of the top hip hop producers in the future. That is, if you use your new Fantom X to its potential and create your own sonic adventure! Best of luck in the future and take care.

Best,

Andrew.
