What Do You think Roland Needs To Add To Next Update?
Damn, Here We Go!
Artemio, your tone seems intent on "scolding" me rather than suggesting I check elswhere in the manual regarding a keyboard that I own and have experience with. My question to you and curiosity since I've come to this site (and I mean no harm) is how do you seem to know so much about a keyboard you say you don't have? I'm aware that you have friends who have the FS but I sincerely hope you get the keyboard. That is if you don't already have it. Does it seem that I'm implying something here, you figure it out. More to my point though, while yes, the erase all feature is supposed to erase all of the notes and even some of the notes in a given range if you hold down a specific keyrange, ITS NOT supposed to stop or freeze up after said notes have been erased.(this is a bug that needs to be fixed!). Other wise what is the purpose of "realtime erase" which serves to keep creative flow/sequencer going with out stopping which was the point of my post. Also, IT IS NOT possible to compare the b4 and after rhythm (actual groove performance) pattern created by the user in sequencer mode. This you can do on an O1/W and Triton. This again, was what I was attempting to convey. I'm also fully aware that you can compare the b4 and after created tone patch or rhythm kit but perhaps you didnt understand my post. no prob. You also chose to pick out only two of the 6 things that I said I would like to see in a future O.S. update. Why is that? Anyway if I seem negative its not my intention. I simply take issue with the tone of your "please be accurate when reporting such things and just be sure you read the manual and FAQ." Part of the reason I don't post here as much as others is because in addition to using my time to make and perform music, I also spend time reading the manual so I don't need to be told like a child to "read the manual and FAQ." Just a closing note. I'm 41 years old and a professional keyboard player, engineer and producer. I'm confident in my knowledge of the FS and I'm still learning. For while its interface is user friendly and easy to operate out of the box, its a keyboard that has a lot of depth waiting to be explored. In addition, while the FS is a great keyboard, it could be better. You seem to want to defend the merits of this keyboard at all costs even though it has some definite flaws. In this age of modern keyboards some things should not be missing from a professional keyboard workstation no matter how much your enamored with it. You IMO should be more mindful of how you address people on this site who post, especially if you don't know them. I believe its called internet etiquette. Just thought you should know. Peace.

It's easy to misinterpret someone's tone on the 'net. I think Artemio was being helpful. I also don't think he or some of us are/were aware of your how much you have learned about the Fantom. I think Artemio was being sugggestive. I've seen some mean people, and Artemio ain't one of 'em

I respect that Keys BeMe voiced his opinion and did it in the manor in which he did.

I tried this and had no problem.
What version of the OS are you on. I am 1.05
Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing.
I am in the sequencer, in record mode, and looping 8 measures. Having recorded something, I then hit erase, then hold down a range of keys (that include what I just recorded) to be deleted and hold it whilst it loops.

Re: What Do You think Roland Needs To Add To Next Update?
Keys BeMe, please take my sincere apoogees for offending you with my post. I didn't mean anything bad... Sorry... I really feel very shy about this.
But there are many reasons I said what I said...
1. Yes, I really try to defend the FS. And I don't know why. Maybe it's love.
2. The reason why I omitted other 6 points you raised is that I agree with them. FS needs many OS improvements and soon you'll find out that I'm not just sitting and waiting for the new OS.
3. No, I don't have a FS. I played the S88 twice for about 1.5 hours, that's all. It was like making love to a girl that you'll think of each and every second ever after... All my knowledge is based on the FS manual that DogZilla sent me, the info I know from the net and have on my site, and all I heard from everybody who uses it.
4. I'm feeling not very well in last several days, so I may act strange... I do listen to my doctors that say I need to rest, rest and rest... But hey, how can I leave you guys without my (maybe unneeded) replies, updated FAQ, new sample packs, newsletters?... How would you leave without all this?...
Hope this clears the situation.
Apoogees again and good luck!
Artemio.

Thanks a lot, Keys BeMe! I'm really glad you understand me.
Good luck to you!
Artemio.
Good luck to you!
Artemio.
O mighty Roland, hear my prayer!
for the next update:
I want more functionality from the pads, especially the ability to select/deselect individual tracks in a sequence.
And continuous 'in track' sampling
..and a quick 'return to default' function for the realtime filter knobs.
In return for all this, O great Roland, I'll sacrifice a lamb and promise to visit roland.co.uk every Sunday

External Keys Friendly?
I switched over to the Roland from Motif ES, and there are some great things that the roland has going and there are some somewhat silly things that I can't get my head around...
Why the keyrange only applies to the local keyboard in performance mode?
Only editable velocity in patch mode...goes from a 30 second setup to 5 minutes or more if you've got several multitimbral patches pulled into the performance...
Volume, chorus, reverb, all seem to be uneditable once the rx midi channel is switched from its matched track number.... or only editable from the external board. If you're using a simple or older controller as an external, sending specific volume commands isn't easy or just impossible...
So far the Fantom doens't stand up from a live-stage controller standpoint - maybe it was never conceived as such, but competing products blow it away thus far in that department. It takes too long to edit very simple things like keyrange and velocity layers, and others its just impossible (like if you've got a lead synth sticking out in the mix and its assigned to the external keyboard, you basically have to rebuild the performance to get the volume right - please correct me if i'm wrong on this - I would LOVE to be wrong on this)

Re: What Do You think Roland Needs To Add To Next Update?
A vocoder please. The X has audio inputs, couldn't a software update create this? This would turn my X8 into an absolute monster!!!!
Sampling, MP3, FLAC, Keyswitches
I am using the XR and have been playing around with the sampling and can see a few areas of improvement that would really make a huge difference.
1. Allow easy creation of "keyswitches" which would switch layers with a simple note on or note off.
2. Allow saving of MP3 or FLAC or proprietary ROLAND Compressed sound via software and internally.
I have 2 gig expansion card and it can hold 3 or 4 of my several hundred sample cds. Each full CD takes a long time to load, which without power backup is not gig friendly. The internal format used for the SRX cards is highly compressed, MP3 can do 10 to 1 and FLAC can do 10 to 1 with zero loss. Unless they are using a chip that is hardcoded to read wav and aiff files, they should be able to read an alternate format. Imaging loading the equivalent of a full sample CD in a minute!! or having 40 CDs on one 2gig card! FLAC takes a while to compress but plays instantly so it may only be possible to use for imported sounds and not recording them. This feature would keep the hardware sampler alive for a few more years - it is getting harder and harder to compete with computer sampling (MAC, PC, LINUX). The key switches used in gigastudio or kontakt to switch modes for a violin (legato, staccato, etc), for example, could be easily set up the user software probably even the small xr interface. Create a layer for each mode and then select a "keyswitch function" an map an note on to selecting the layer. While it might not be realistic to use conversion software like chickensys and keep the switches, they could be made very, very painless to recreate. These two features are very possible for the Fantom series, so I hope someone is out there listening. I would easily pay $100-$150 for the ability to use compressed files and setup keyswitches. It would be cheaper than most software upgrades...

Re: What Do You think Roland Needs To Add To Next Update?
I only have one real wish: A BETTER FILESYSTEM.
The old eight-dot-three thing is horrible, I end up with files named "XXXXYYYY" where XXXX is the code for a music project and YYYY is from 0000 to 9999. Then I have to keep notes as to which cryptic name matches which longer song name that's human-readable. Thank God for freeware spreadsheet programs! It's not a FATAL error but it means there's one more step added when loading up a project I'm working on (looking the damnable code # up). My MP3 player supports long file names and it cost an order of magnitude less than my Fantom X6.
A nice to have would be an arpeggiator like my Motif ES Rack has, but that'll be less of a big deal once I spend quality time learning to program the X6s arp generator. Faster sample load times would also be cool, but since I don't really use the X6s sampling capability at this point it's not a showstopper - I'd go with FLAC encoding, myself.
Regardless, I'm happy with about everything else, my X6 drives my Motif ES Rack flawlessly (something my sequencers seem to have an Issue with) and it's been a lot more stable and immediate to create with than my old software-only setup.
------------------------------
Fantom X6 (V2 OS), SRX05, SRX06, SRX08, SRX09. Oh, and a Motif ES Rack with PLG-AN and PLG-DX cards.

attention on live players Roland..
Best use of part mute / unmute.
Why do I need need 128 voices of polyphony if my old xp 30 must manage better poliphony (64 voices) mute parts must be midi off not just lower the volume (great joke) I can?t play more than 4 sounds with out cutting poly with a 8 part set..
Easier way to change parts and parameters at the touch of button with out scrolling over menus. Roland , please think in live players , not all of us have enough time to search multiple menus
More fx in performance mode. Motif can handle 8 inserts (this means that at least 8 sounds must preserve the original sound cause fx are the same sets than in patch mode, not just only one MFX.)
compatiblity with S700 files on sampler.
Better arpegiator, and better
pleasecorrect this terrible bug on xa. you can?t turn off the sound on the channel selected in performance mode. even with the Keyboard swith turned off, i always ear the sound of the selected part. if I use a 4 part performance but only need to to play part 4 and part 1 is selected (keyboard swith off) , It?s never mute. terrible bad.
Please include an eq for each part, like in motif series, and upgrade the eq, I can?t go higher than 8khz on high freq

Re: What Do You think Roland Needs To Add To Next Update?
You could always check out my thread. It solves a lot of problems typical for live players, i.e. the polyphony problem and you'll be able to switch setups blazingly fast. The keyrange problem not working for external gear I haven't managed to solve though. I use the Fantom almost only stand-alone, I do send some PC's but that's about it.
