Can someone help me understand the sequencer?
Can someone help me understand the sequencer?
I dont have my fantom yet but I have been able to play it at a music store for the past few days and I really enjoy the sounds. Ive read a lot about recording songs from the workshops on rolandus and the owners manual but I just dont get the sequencer. My main problem is I dont understand if you want to have a dropout of an instrument at a part of the song how do you do this if it is in a pattern? Would making a song track by track for each take a long time?

Just think of the sequencer as a multi-track recorder that copies digital data rather than actual audio. Then add on the fact that as long as the data is still digital you can manipulate the heck out of it before you convert it to true audio. Hope this helps. If not ask more.

I couldnt figure out how to copy and paste the main melody so that it went had and intro, chorus, verse, etc. I dont understand how you sequence the droping out or adding of instruments during say the verse or chorus of a song.

Sounds like you are wanting variations of the Verse, chorus, intro to play at different parts of the song. Or your intro is going to be the kick /snare pattern of your verse, and You want to add bass, pads etc..... into the verse. But then you want to trigger your chorus, andother verse, then drop parts out of the verse and make sort of a bridge to the second chorus.
Or something along those lines.
My advice to you, is to download the manual(if you haven't already) and read up on how to assign patterns to RPS. or how to use skip back sampling to turn the different elements of your beat into samples. skip back sampling will probably be the easiest way to go about it, but RPS will give you the most flexiblity, as the data is still midi.
It's going to look a little difficult in the manual, and it will seem confusing, if I tried to explain it. But once you get the Fantom home, you'll start thinking right, and it'll be easy.

I actually do a lot of copying on my tracks. Lets say you want to repeat your first chorus on measure 35. Go to track edit and copy it to the desired measure then go to another track and record whatever different thing you want to add. The problem with the pattern calls is that when you have (for example) an 8 measure pattern and you make a pattern call on track for it. If you have to start playing your song from (for example) the next measure from wher you put the pattern call, you wont here your pattern till the next pattern call. Sometimes its better to copy the pattern than to make a pattern call.

I appreciate the help. I guess I really need to get the Fantom before I start to ask questions. I've just been so hyped man. Ive been messing with fl for about 2 years now and I finally decided I need to get some hardware. I read up on all the main three boards and I arrived at the decision to go with the fantom. I almost a third of the way there on the money and the anticipation is killing me.

Hi,
Watch for bargains of "Customer Returns" and "Samples/Floor models" at great discounts. I got my Fantom S-61 as a customer return. It was right after the FX came out... turns out the guy wanted the newer FX board with the multi-colored display and returned his FS. The FS I got was in near mint condition. I got it last May, 2004 for $999. Everything was there and they gave me a year waranty starting from when "I bought it" not the other guy.
