Converting old sequences in Fantom X6

Post by Adminrxb »

Hi All,

I have about 200 or so midi sequences on Ensoniq TS-10 that I need to transfer in Fantom X6. TS-10 is on its last legs and will choke on me anytime.

It was about time that I make the next investment and after research I have purchased Fantom X6 v2.0 2 weeks ago.

Remapping the drum kits and patches is a long process and may not give me the same tonality as sounds have their differences. I was thinking if I can take the stereo output out of my TS-10 and plug it into the sampling input and then just record the TS-10 as a sample. Will this work ?

I have expanded my board to 544MB and am also waiting for the PC Card Adaptor and 2.x GB compact flash drive. I also have a PC with more than 200 GB space available.

This should save me a lot of time. Will I be able to just plugin the TS-10 and play the sequence and start recording in the Fantom ? It should be recorded as a sample not midi but playing back should still work.

Has anyone tried this before or know if it will work as expected ? I am sure there are folks on the board that had a need of converting the sequences to the new board. Any best practices or lessons learnt ?

Any help is appreciated.

Yes, of course you can do this! The very best way should be to resample the individual sounds/loops from the TS, then record the sequences from TS to Fantom via MIDI, and then recreate the sounds on the Fantom so the sequencer are played like on the TS. But indeed this process will take a long time.

I'd suggest you not to sample whole songs, but maybe various parts, loops etc. and then trigger them from the Fantom. Otherwise you'd simply better use a MiniDisc or record to CD and then play from a CD player.

Thanks for the quick response Artemio.

TS-10 song is a combination of small sequences. You actually create individual sequences for intro, chorus etc and then join them in steps to create a song. Your tip allows me to play individual sequences on TS-10 instead of a whole song and record as a sample on at a time. Then join these individual sample as a song in fantom just like they are joined in TS-10. Mute some TS-10 tracks that can be sent as midi from fantom. This was there is some midi in there as well to preserve the file size. Guitar sounds are just too good in fantom to be left unused also.

Will try this and post the results. Who wants to retouch 200 sequences that already play according to my taste today. I am scared of just thinking about it :-)
