No sound from Arpeggiator

Post by pianoman41 »

Okay, I've had my X7 for a couple of weeks and I'm slowly learning the ins and outs of it. However, I am completely stumped when it comes to the arpeggiator. Whenever I press the "arpeggio" button to turn it on I get absolutely no sound when I press the keys. No matter what I do I get nothing. As soon as I shut the button off I get my selected patch again. I'm doing this in patch mode. What am I missing? How do I get the arpeggiator to sound?

Press the SELECT/EDIT button in the arp/rhythm section, then try scrolling through preset patterns.

Okay, at first I thought this was my imagination or that I didn't know enough about running the X7, but now I definitely think something here is amiss. Every once in a while I completely lose the arpeggio/rhythm section, and this has happened several times (hence my first post here--I thought I was doing something wrong because I got no sound when I pressed the buttons). I can't pinpoint when/why it happens but at some point in time I will press arpeggio and it will light up but the keys make no sound at all. As soon as I shut off arpeggio the keys make normal sound again. If I press rhythm, it lights up and the top 8 pads go out but if I press them they make no sound at all. And if I press chord memory it also lights but the keys make no sounds at all. It's almost like the sound generator for that whole section just dies. And it doesn't seem to matter what patch I'm on.

A power off/on always resets it, but this is annoying just with me goofing around--I can't imagine having to power off and on in the middle of a live performance.

Has anyone else experienced this?

just in case... if you are connected to other equipment...make sure the fantom sync mode is set to master...

Also, in performance mode, you have arp assigned to only one of the 16 parts - the one that has "ARP" box below it's number in MIXER.

Good thoughts, but there is no other equipment connected and although the arp assignment to one of the 16 parts makes sense, this is not the case here. I'm using the factory preset peformances AND individual patches.

Example: One of my favorites is Performance Preset 26 "Bump It Up." It's got a preassigned rhythm part and arpeggio for the bass line. When this oddity happens with my X7, if I go to this preset and press a bass key, it makes no noise at all, and pads 9-16 make no noise either. Even if I switch to patch mode no matter what I choose I get no noise if the arp or rhythm or chord memory button is lit. A power off/on fixes it and everything is back working fine.

I can't figure out what is causing it to lose the arp sound generator. I don't recall if it did this before version 2.0 but I think it might have. Just a thought--does anyone else here leave their Fantom X on 24 hours a day? I'm wondering if it has something to do with going in and out of the screensaver mode or a sleep mode or something.

I leave mine on 24/7 as well and regularly (i.e. every time I come back to it after not playing for a while) lose the ability to play patterns. Pressing the rec and stop clears it, as does going to demo mode. Haven't yet figured out other ways to reset this other than turning the synth off and back on (which is particularly painful because of how long it takes).

Have you looked at the Arp Sync

Post by kliptek »

Hey all,

I dont know if this is related but you may have the arp sync on (under the system menu -> sync/temp or something like that. I'm at work so I cant look) and the pattern sync on (not too sure where that one is. it might be under shift + pattern) . These options cause the arp/rhythm generators to sync to a measure or beat.

I think what might be happening is that you are playing around and happen to stop the sequencer half way through a measure. If you press play again the arp and pattern wont start until the next measure, so if you are too hasty (ie, dont hold long enough) you want actually see the arp working.

Have you tried playing the arp without the sequencer going? If you have and you still have the same problem, then the above probably wont fix it.

Just a thought.

Samething, I leave mine on a lot, and sometimes I come back to it, and there are no sounds from rhythm Play, or arpeggio. turning it of and on usually fixes it. I'll have to try that rec stop thing.

I leave all my studio gear on 24/7. Most electronics like that do fine in a well-ventilated area, and there is the age-old debate about which is worse for electronics--the constant-on usage or the power-up power spike and resulting thermal heating/cooling cycles. I don't want to start THAT debate here. :)

It's good to see others have the same problem as me. It appears as though something goes "to sleep" after the X7 has been idle for some time. I can't tell what the time period has to be or what has to happen but when it does I lose:

-Sound from rhythm patterns
-Sound from arpeggios
-Sound from RPS
-Sound from chord memory
-The "pulse" part of patches that are listed as Pulsing

It only happens when coming out of a 30+ minute screensaver session (but not ALL the time). A power cycle always cures it. I'll have to try the start/stop trick myself and see if that works.

The rec/stop trick definitely works. I spoke with Roland US tech support on the phone today and reported this phenomenon. It was the first they'd heard of it, but he said they were going to look into it. Hopefully they can figure it out and a fix will be in the next OS maintenence release.

Yup, me too...:-(

After watching some more of my DVD manual, I decided to try the arpeggiator for the first time (I've only had my X for a few months; I have the new mobo and V. 2.0 btw).

I was confused because I have the same problem--no sound from the arpeggiator. So I did a search here and found this thread.

The rec/stop trick worked, so thank you all. But it seems like a dumb thing for the X to do, no?!
