Ever have one of those days?
Ever have one of those days?
I was pretty convinced at the beginning of the day that I was going to drive to my local GC and grab a Motif ES7 to compliment my Fantom X. I was also going to buy a few more SRX cards ... World, Brass and Drums to compliment the Vintage Card I already have installed in my FantomX
I had also planned on getting a PLG150VL, a PLG150DX and PLG150PC.
I figured I'd end up with the "best of both worlds" so to speak.
When I got there ... everything just sounded like CRAP to me ... jusy having one of those days, y'know? The FAntom sounded like crap, the Motif sounded like crap, a Triton Extreme sounded like crap, I even had a cahnce to mess with a Nord Electro ... sounded like crap.
I really need to get my back healed quickly ... because my ears (or attitude or something) are being screwed to hell by my current medication!

Re: Ever have one of those days?
it's your attitude!
))
i bought komplete 04, z3ta+, Reason 2.5 and a few other soft stuff.....after hearing z3ta+, FM7, and Reaktor, pretty much everything else sounded like crap.....including reason. Reaktor and z3ta+ were my favorite ones. Absynth 3 is very cool and eerie sounding with some nice pads and effects and leads. Pro-53 is a killer in leads/Pads. FM-7 : absolute beast and cut through the mix when i mixed it with Triangle II and another synth in SONAR 3.
so, my conclusion is that you would have heard something very sophisticated a few moments ago and it would have stuck in your mind. when u played the boards, your brain would have expected that kinda quality and when u didnt get that, u thought they were crap.....happens to a lot of us!
so, to "correct" your ears, listen to something of poor quality...when this happened to me, i went to Malstorm in Reason and created a simple lead patch and applied some reverb and other effects. my ears got "adjusted" to the "normal" sound and when i played Fantom S I felt normal again!!

Guitar Center?!?!
Your medication most certainly is causing an iatrogenic chemical imbalance in your noggin!
Man, EVERYTHING sounds like crap at GC!
Stay away, far away from that place and spend your money somewhere where you'll get great customer service after you buy etc.
(Unless you have a good buddy who works at GC and will make you a killer deal etc.......

I am! More Details...
Re: Ever have one of those days?
I never get inspired by these things, I see them as tools that to me will always be a compromise from a 'real' instrument that lives and breathes.....
If Guitar Center had a couple of pianos, rhodes, clavs, wurlies etc, I know where I'd be sitting....

Re: Ever have one of those days?
If you like Clavinets, Rhodes, Wurlies ... (I'm an ol' skool freak myself) ... then you need to check out a couple of things:
1) The SRX07 card for the Fantom REALLY has it nailed as far as any of the all-in-one workstations are concerned. Especially the Wurlitzer EP. I had a Chuck Monte "Dyno Modified" Wurlie that finally gave up the gost on me (may it reast in peace), and I never thought I'd get that sound again. But, with the Wurlies in the SRX07 card I can play SuperTramp tunes all day and never really miss it.
2) The Clavia Nord Electro does incredible Clavinets and B3 imitations ... seriously, check it out if you can ... it'll knock your socks off. You can even pick all of the different pickup positions just like on a real D6!

Re: Ever have one of those days?
I hear you but I just don't feel that way about digital clones. Don't get me wrong, that is what I use for live. And going to see a gig with an Electro or whatever I'm always surprised at how good it sounds. But sit me down with one and I just don't connect or get inspired like I do with the real thing. I suppose it's always a compromise for us keys players. You never see guitarists playing 'fake' guitars although the technology is there. I guess its the same for me.
Re: Ever have one of those days?
Oh I can relate .... there's no way a Fantom (or anything else) FEELS like a real EP200A, for instance. And taht can affect your subjective enjoyment as a player.
It's just one of those compromises I've learned to accept over the years, I guess.
I used to have a "Fort Wakeman" setup consisting of:
Hammond M100 w/ Leslie
Wurlitzer EP200A (Chuck Monte Modified)
Hohner Clavinet D6
Hohner Pianet T (kinda redundant, huh?)
2 MiniMoog Model Ds
Moog Prodigy
Yamaha CS-20M
Yamaha CS-60
Roland JX3P
Arp Omni2
Prophet 5
Yamaha DX7
(oh, and I had ATA-rate Anvil cases for everything!)
My back just can't take that nonsense anymore, and of course the wife acceptance factor would be just about negative 10!

Re: Ever have one of those days?
Haha fabulous, throw in an acoustic piano too and that's what I'm talking about. I'm with you on the Pianet, I had one for a while and just couldn't work out what to do with it, I really wanted to like it , but sadly I had to let it go... heavy wee thing it was too.

Re: Ever have one of those days?
Dansgold, I have to agree with you on that Electro. It really does an amazing job in getting close to that real hammond sound. Now the feel is a little bit different, but the best clonewheel by far. I went one step further and put it through a 142 lesle and OMG did that change everything. I think the FX with SRX07 has some great patches, but I still can't give up the Electro for the hammond sounds.
Re: Ever have one of those days?
The pianet was a weird beastie for me. I really didn't like the "stock" sound too muc, but I got it from a friend in lieu of repayment for a loan, y'konw?
I noticed when Chuck Monte was modding my EP200A, that one of the things he did was move the reeds as close to the pickup bar as possible without causing them to actually touch when played hard. (I insisted on watching him do the work, which sortof pissed him off!)
So, with the Pianet I figured "what the heck?" I adjusted the reeds as close to the pickup bar as possible and it got a lot beefier. Then I ran the whole mess through a Boss Distortion, a Boss CE1 Chorus and a MXR Phase 100 ... I got this most ridiculous "Rod Argent" style distorted tone that I just couldn't part with it for a while. It was also cool that I could just grab the Pianet and a PigNose amp and take it with me anywhere ... since no AC power was required!
