Midi interface

I 'm trying to track my songs from the FX to Protools LE. When I set the Fantom X's USB mode to MIDI and connect the Fantom X to my computer's USB port does that act as a MIDI interface (IN, OUT, THRU) or am I wrong? If I'm wrong, what is the USB for?
