Post by Blazin »

The guy doesn't talk much about the Talk Box part ... all he says is no one can get it. So how did he get it and why is he selling it now that he has an exclusive upgrade that no one can get ??? Kinda strange ... Anyone know where there might be more info ???

*) Either the audio tracks update (OS 2.0)
*) Or some 3rd party software of unknown quality and utility
*) Or a scam

email the vendor and find out. And tell us too :)

Hi all. I emailed him awhile back and this is how it went.

(Me) Hi, in your auction you mentioned "talk box software" just want to know more information about this, since I've never heard or read anything about it for the Fantom-X. Thanks

(Him) Hello...I really don't have much of the technical info. about this software but it was put in for one of Roland's special clients. It is not for the general pubic but from I understand, it will be available next year for all the messes. From all I know is that this software can change sounds of the keyboard or anything that you sample much like a TALK BOX does with additional changes possible to program. Sorry that I can't give you any additional info. but I don't play keyboards.

Sum up IMHO of course. Basically I think it's a scam for him to get people to be like oh wow I'm getting something super rare so let me bid on it.

Why not just buy a real talk box and mic thru to the input on the fantom and sample til the cows come home?

A vocoder effect is one of the things i'm missing most on the Fantom.
A talk box effect could eventually be an alternative for me.
I'm playing live and i hate carrying and connecting many devices at the gigs.

Sounds like a scam to me as well.

I'd be amazed to find out that it would be possible to use the mic input as a modulator for a Vocoder effect. I suppose it's not entirely beyond the capabilities of the hardware ... it just seems unlikely, something more suited to the V-Synth.

I'd also be thrilled to be proven wrong about this.

entirely possible

the DSP chip in the Fantom is easily capable of the vocoder effect including harmonies and other effects readily available in the arranger type keyboards. at this point I beleive it is a marketing decision. you know "you cant have your cake and eat it too.."

I am sure there would need to be some sort of compromise as far as polyphony and also effects to enable some of these options. I beleive that the fantom will be able to in the near future be able to use the pc cardslot for more than storage and i think that they will eventually be able to stream audio off of the PC card. These limitations are most probably software in nature. unless the engineers just decided to use proprietary pc cardslot controller chips which is very shortsighted due to the nature of the cardslot. I would pay decent money to buy v-cards for the fantom x that would give me things like hard drive storage or effects and dsp upgrades. even display and mouse enhancements would be neat and could possibly be done.

software is a wonderful thing...

FWIW: The VS-2480 VS8f-2 effects cards come with Vocoder effects, so this is not new for Roland.
