john2910: erm, are you taling about a possible multiple copyright violation that would make Roland forget about this place once and for all? I will not support this. (read: I will delete any and all posts! ;-)).

Well...

I said I have OS 2.0 PRE-INSTALLED.
So no PC card adapter and no CF.
These are for upgrading KIT.

And even if I could flash the OS (what a challenge !), I would't share, since I have no money left to face a trial.

IMPORTANT: Insert a CF memory card before starting test

"I will do the test as soon as I get home"

Thanks

I do need to clarify the point of the test is not to see if any sample remain but...

currently if you create a new song and create new samples.
when you save song plus samples using a CF card all is saved.

however:
if you boot up with pref option (load user samples swithed off)
and choose LOAD SONG it only loads the song.

if you choose to load song +samles, the FX insists!!! on loading every other sample you have stored on the card and this take a long long time.

i need to know the following..

if you boot up with load user samples OFF.

Create a new audio track

Save song+samples

switch off

power up

choose LOAD SONG (not load song+sample)
does the audio track load with samples or not?

if not

choose LOAD SONG+SAMPLES
Does the the song load with only samples for that song or
does it still load every other sample.

good hunting ;)

Questions about OS 2.0

Post by shakil »

Hey... I have the same questin as Quinnx.

Form the specs that I have read, it seems that it's still not a regular 'DAW'. You still have to load the audio tracks into RAM. It won't play from the Flash Card directly. I might be wrong.

The other question I have is, let's say you have a 4 bar audio track, and you start playing the song from the second bar, does the audio track sound? or do you have to start playing from the beggining of the audio track?

Thanks

i would be sure it would play from any point just like a regular audio track player.
it would be pointless other wise??

as far as playing from CF i cant see it,
since the who point of audio in ram is instant access and processing without any latency, especial for live performaces'

I have Fantom X-7, but I would much rather try to synch to my old VS-880 than try to do to much audio with my Fantom. Just the sample load time alone ruins it for me. Currently 170 megs of samples takes me 10 minutes to load. 512 megs will take about 30 minutes. Ouch! The old trusty VS-880 loads almost instantly. It does sound great also and the FX are awesome still today.

I love my Fantom X! It is an awesome synth! But sampler?...I am glad they are adding features, but I hope they are also addressing the filing system issues also, otherwise it is very difficult to use. You either have to load all samples or choose 1 sample at a time. No loading according to patch or song. If I am wrong let me know...

Quinnx: "since the whole point of audio in ram is instant access " ... playing from RAM is not instant... RAM needs to be loaded first.. for about 10 minutes...

All digital audio recorders (not sample players) play directly from the storage media... hard disk, or flash cards, instantly... as soon as you turn them on.

For me I love the FantomX for the reason I bought it...patch manipulation and creation, but as MadaHorn was saying, the greatest sampler it isn't. Loading samples compared to a soft sampler is slow, sending something like a whole Akai disc via usb excrutiatingly slow and imho the current file system for user loaded samples is horrible.

As for OS2, I record all my audio on the computer so I can do alot more manipulation without the limitations of fx than is possible on the Fantom, plus I already have a cf card. So I don't really need the audio tracks in version 2, but I still might get it just for the new patches :)

It has been stated in several threads that loading samples via the card rather than usb is considerably quicker. You might want to consider loading your samples via card. It will still take some time but it is somewhat faster.

Audio tracks and MFX limits

Does anyone have noticed that with resampling and 8 audio tracks you could sample your midi tracks with effects, delete them and then assign effects elsewhere ?

mondroncube quote "Does anyone have noticed that with resampling and 8 audio tracks you could sample your midi tracks with effects, delete them and then assign effects elsewhere ? "

But what if you want to change the effects of the track you have already resampled. You would have to write down the effects and settings for future reference, but on the computer I can use as many effects as I want and then freeze the tracks and I don't have to worry about resampling them and writing down effect settings.

Like I said before, I love the Fantom for the sounds. I think it is a powerful synth and has some great features like the skip back sampling, but imho it is really lacking in some areas to be called a workstation. When I can leave my computer off and do everything from a single peice of equipment that is what I would consider a work station. Right now my computer is my central work station and the Fantom is an instrument.

Sorry to get off topic fantomizers =)
