Probably about less than half an hour. 512MB divided by .4 MB per sec =1280 seconds divided by 60 sec per minute gives you 21.33 minutes. Saving is slightly slower. Count on saving to take the full 30 minutes.

I am new to sampling. I have owned many synths but the Fantom X-7 is my first sampler. Are most samplers this slow at loading into RAM? I installed about 170 Mb(the entire Pyramid Real Rhodes disk) and it takes almost 10 minutes to load. Of course I will be adding other samples. I guess when setting up for a gig I better set up the Fantom first and start it loading while getting the rest of the stage set up. But, is this normal in the sampling world? Could I buy a stand alone sampler that would load much faster? Thanks!

yes this is a common problem with samplers, I remember the akai z8 review in sound on sound complaining about the time it takes to fill the ram and that is direct from its internal hard disk. My XR currently has about 70mb which takes 3 minutes to load. If you're doing festivals or similar where you are wheeled on stage a minute before you start ( happened to me a few times ) I would recommend getting a UPS battery supply which lets you load up when there is no power.

Filling RAM

Accepting the load time for RAM, I am wondering if the Fantom is free to be doing other things while the loading is taking place,ie., can one be playing in the meantime.

no, you can't do anything while samples are loading, unfortunately.....
