How many members use the Fantom Sequencer?

Post by Jost »

Hi guys - this might be a weird post, nevertheless its of high interest to me: How many of you guys actually use the sequencer of the Fantom?

For years I have been using ProTools or other Hard disc Recorders for creating songs and I always thought the Fantom Sequencer is a kind of sales gimmick. But all this talk lately on the upgrade towards 8 audio tracks made me curious - so, how many of you guys out there use the Fantom Sequencer and achieve professional results?

Thanks so much in advance for any posts (I do Trance and Electronica)

I don't achieve professional results because I'm not a professional musician, but the Fantom sequencer is extremely easy for me to use and I've only been working with music for a year.

I use the Fantom-X sequencer exclusively. However, I'm only a hobbyist, not a professional. Plus, I don't generally record other live instruments or vocals. If I were doing audio work, at least without the OS 2.0 upgrade, I doubt I'd be using the Fantom-X sequencer.

I use the Fantom exclusively for sequencing, then feed my tracks to a Tascam 2488. I wouldn't say that it's 'professional' quality, though some of it is pretty good.

I find the sequencer really useful. It's an amazingly quick and easy writing tool. It's basic functions are so easy and intuitive to use, that for me it's great in terms of getting idea after idea down and recorded. I haven't ever totally finished a track in the fantom sequencer, as I find the micro edit function a bit too fiddley, so it's at that point I either leave a track unfinished, take the idea to the band, or into a studio.... it amazing for getting ideas down...I hope to get the OS 2.0 upgrade, and look forward to throwing guitars or vocals into the song, cos that's been a bit of a mission to date.

I too use the sequencer often. But anything I make that is going professional is passed on to sound guys that have a better grasp on mixing than I. I think the sequencer is quite usable for a quality sound but, it takes a good mix person to get it there. JMIO

I only use the Fantom sequencer. I find that having it right in front of my face while banging on the keys keeps the creative juices flowing without interuption. Once you get used to it, its very functional. It's obviously more complex than pointing and clicking with a mouse, but I like it a lot.

Nathan, I listened to your songs - doesn't sound 'hobbyist' to me, mate.

Having read all your posts I am getting the idea that the Fantom sequencer is a very usefull facility, just wandering if the upgrade could turn the Fantom into a serious song writing facility, such as hooking up all other synths directly into the Fantom and laying down tracks in this fashion - so no need to use another sequencer.

I quite like Bruisers thought that the whole song is right in front of your eyes.

I like having everything in one place, not jumping back and forth to computer to keyboard to computer to keyboard....

I am using the internal sequencer in my FS only. I have lots of audio material per project, but I find it pretty easy to incorporate samples into the songs.

Jost, you can sequence exactly the way you want if you use the Fantom's micro edit also. If you're more of a classical timing person. Then you got your measures and what not. You got groove patterns or pattern sequencing. Step sequencing. The fantom is extremely top notch. You can work it amazingly. I come from a MPC backround too.

i used to use the FS's sequencer...very simple and easy to use.
now, i use Sonar 3 PE's sequencer. i'd say for midi, FS's sequencer's functions are as competent as Sonar's. plus, it can record SysEx mssgs!

why, FS has a useful tool for input quantizing while recording loops, and i really use that. i miss that feature in sonar!

so, yes, the sequencer is great!

The Fantom X Sequencer is a great start- And a great sequencer bar none comparing to otherb oards-
but professionals usually have a whole computer setup with a nice Mixing board- Protools Digi 002, Mac G4-G5, A bunch of softsynths and whatnot- but as for having a Board to play Live and Sequence Fantom X works awesome

I have to say I have the protools rig and all but I find that I'm much quicker and more comfortable on the FX. I'm on my second fantom X. I bought one the week it hit the Guitar Center where I live and kept telling myself with reason protools ableton live I really don't need this and took it back and missed it like a child in Iraq or something. I really think as far as midi sequencing (aside from the mv-8000) it's the best but you have to take the time to get to know her. I may be biased since I am kind of turning my back on software right now. Just my opinion.
