You might want to check out the Newbie FAQ's. They are pretty deep into helping with getting that first recording done.

I'd appreciate your opinions
Hey, I don't do hip-hop AT ALL, but I've got great respect for the genre and some of its artists.
Do any of you see a trend away from the Triton and Motif towards the fantomX as "weappon of choice"?
I don't expect people to give up their MPCs, but I'd think a lot of hip-hoppers would like the Fantom pads.
What's the buzz?

Actually, it's funny you mention that. I chose the fantom x over the motif because I felt the Roland wasn't used as heavily as the motif, therefore giving my tracks a more unique sound. It really has too.
Currently I'm saving up for the SRX-08, and I would recommend that any hip hop producer do the same with the fantom. The thing that's a question mark to me are the factory drums that come with the fantom. To me, they aren't "street" enough. Don't get me wrong, they sound really good, but the whole grit and grime isn't really there. That's just my opinion though.

Hey The_Czar for drums...your best bet is to use the sampler in the FS...great...I sample most of my kicks and snares from vinyl...I chose the FS for two reasons...One I wanted an MPC...I cut my budget in half with the FS.....two I didnt hear of anyone using it mainstream!
People still love their tritons and motifs but personally I cant see spending all of that money on a drum machine when I have a drum machine and a serious workstation in one unit.....Obvious choice I think!

Re: For those who make hiphop beats
Have you guys tried getting the whole package of free drum hit from Akai? They load up fine in the Fantom, and sound pretty cool.
Re: For those who make hiphop beats
yeah, I've started to load more and more one-shot hits on my board. What you were saying about having the pad bank is something that I didn't mention but definitely played a part in my decision. Being able to do MPCish operations from it is definitely a big plus and money saved.

Wutz goin on fellas,
I thought I'd jump and give my 2 cents. I seem to use samples more when using the pc to make a beat (w/reason, fl studio), than I do with the fantom.
I found that mixing the kicks with a synth bass or tackin different kicks, I can usually get the sound i'm lookin for. The one of my favorite "SBS" s is the Sub Bass (I think its like patch 78 or something on the Fantom S) mixed with a kick creates a nasty hard hittin kick.
I like samples but for me their more of a pain in my ass. I hate going through the loading process. I just power up and start slappin key and pads.
I also started using the pads more with other patches than the drums, (synth, piano, yada yada).
I'm curious as to how most of you aproach make your slaps?

You can find the FREE Akai samples here:

There's some good stuff there ... don't sleep on it!
Note that the Fantom won't load the program, you'll have to load the samples to pads yourself. (I understand that the Fantom Translator software may eventually support loading the program files as well)
