Fantom X8 and FP5 Roland
Fantom X8 and FP5 Roland
Is there a diference touch response between Fantom X and FP5 Roland.
Re: Fantom X8 and FP5 Roland
Probably, but they are pretty darn close as far as veleocity responce and curve goes. The FP-5 is also graded, so a bit heavier at the bottom, lighter at the top. I think the X8 is balanced with same weight across the board isn't it?
I purchased a Fantom XRack unit, then searched for a keyboard that the XR would respond correctly with. Finally went with the FP-5. Not much on the controller side and no aftertouch, but a great keybed. And not too shabby stand-alone piano as well. In fact I like it better on it's own than my Yamaha P-90.
One to avoid would be the RD-170....really lousy velocity curve, does not work well with the XR at all. Acually the RD-170 doesn't even work well with itself.
The RD-800 seemed like it would be a perfect fit if you need some controller functions and other extra's. It felt about the same as the X8 and had a nice curve response within its own internal sounds, but I did not hook it up to the XR to check that the response was the same. If not the same, I'm guessing it woud be pretty close. Definately worth a look anyway.
Another one that worked surprisingly well with the XR was the M-Audio Keystation 88. Takes a bit to get used to the feel though. The one I brought home developed a key with stuck velocity within a couple hours of playing. So I returned it and opted not to try to find a good one. It just makes me a bit skeptical when a brand new board out of the box developes a problem so quickly.

Re: Fantom X8 and FP5 Roland
I wanted to buy Fantom Xr with a key prostation 88,but I saw that this keyboard had many problems. So I changed my mind for a FP5 or a SE3 Kaway. ( this last one seems very good too). With a pad Mpd 16 Akay maybe!ANd then , I saw another solution .The Fantom X8 at about the same price than the three other ones.So now, I don't know which configuration to choose?
Re: Fantom X8 and FP5 Roland
Hi guys.
I have the X8. It uses Progressive Hammer-Action (graded weight from heavy at bottom to light at top) just like the FP-5 and most of Roland's other digital pianos (including the Fantom-S88). If you hit a key softly and quickly let up on it say half way, you can actually feel what feels like a little hammer coming back to rest on he bottom of the key. The weight of the highest key is noticeably lighter (but not excessively so) than the bottom-most key. It's one of the best feeling simulated piano keyboards I've tried (keep in mind, though, that I do not play a real piano often).
I too played around with the Keystation 88 and was very unimpressed. Felt like a toy compared to the RD-700, Fantom-X8, and Yamaha stage pianos.

Re: Fantom X8 and FP5 Roland
I thought that the Fantom X8 had a balanced touch response and not unbalanced!
Re: Fantom X8 and FP5 Roland
Again, according to Roland's specifications (and my manual) it uses "Progressive Hammer-Action." This is "unbalanced" key weighting. Lower keys are heavier than higher keys (from left to right).
