I went from owning a Roland XP-80 to a Roland XV-5080 to a Roland Fantom-X8. (Since we're sharing synth histories and all. Ha).

How long have you had your motif & what do you think are its pros & cons?

The problem is, as always, only being able to afford one of these. Consider a keyboard stand with Triton EX 61, Motif ES 61, and Fantom-X 61 on each of three tiers. For a bit more than $5000 that solves the whole thing - at least for this year!

In the meantime this discussion goes on and on. Bottom line: Each has pros and cons, some overlapping, some unique to each unit. Whichever is chosen involves tradeoffs of some sort.

I'd rather have the fantom keyboard & motif & triton racks.
Well, actually I'd like my X6, a V-synth & Waldorf Wave/Hartmann Neuron, but I'm not made of money.

I would never shell out on more than one workstation, but thats just me.

3 different keyboard workstations is overkill, IMO.

It takes to much time( for me) to manage all the complexity and learn the ' necessary ' nuances of each board.

Many pro producers use all three - they know that each has its own overall sound, as well as each having certain individual sounds that work within a track. Using just one can make a track somewhat monochromatic - you know like the "all Triton" Hip Hop tracks we used to hear in the late 90s.

Considering you could not start any but the most simple of businesses for under $5500, from that perspective it seems a small investment to aquire all three. Heck, you can't even buy a decent used car for that money.

I'm not saying that great music can't be made with just one workstation - but simply that the time spent pondering A vs B vs C, of which I've spent way, way too much, is worth money. And if I have earning potential via my music, then maybe solving the problem by aquiring all of them makes financial as well as artistic sense.

I know many guys who have done just that, and they haven't gone bankrupt - far from it. Even our esteemed colleague GregC owns both Triton Extreme 76 and Fantom X Rack. Many guys on the Fantom, Motif, and Triton forums report owning all three. It sure is a simple solution to the "Fantom vs Motif vs Triton" connundrum.

hey 2tim, fair point. If owning 3 music workstations is a big part of the ' secret sauce' to making a good living in the music business, go for it ! As you pointed out, lots of folks are doing it well.

I for one, cannot figure out any formula. It appears to me that sheer talent and excellent performance by a keyboardist
is not a major factor to financial success in the industry.
Most folks I know gig part time or do a little of everything to
stay 1 step ahead of the sheriff.

You are right, $5500 is a few drops in the bucket in terms of starting a new business.

I am weary of the A vs B vs C debates and inquiry. It is analagous to asking a bunch of strangers which girl in the bar should I have a
relationship with. Maybe if one is 15 years old, any knowledge is valid : D

As you kindly noted, I like having ' the power of 2 ' in my setup.
The Korg + Roland combination lets us combine the strengths of both. Its a comfort factor, too. I started with the X5 and Jv 880.
