I noticed my fantom will lower sound for a half a second when I seem to hit clipping under heavy bass. makes my track sound go up and down. You can clearly see it when you record. I like to hit clip in dance tunes because the volume is louder and you can't hear it. Right now the workaround is to record at lower level and normalize to 110-120% once recorded onto the computer.
Any idea why this is happening. I've got output at +1db btw.
Problem with Fantom sound output
Re: Problem with Fantom sound output
You have a mastering compressor that will prevent clipping and compress/lower the overall level when there are may punchy sounds playing simultaneously. Either turn the mastering off, or select Soft Comp algorithm and possibly adjust the compression settings for low/mid/high bands so that your tune sounds like you want it to.

Thanks a lot Art !
Re: Problem with Fantom sound output
Ok I had a chance to try what you said and it doesn't work.
I tried disabling all the effects and mastering I still hear it. I tried lowering the overall volume of my tracks to remove clipping completely and it does the same thing. It's like there is a heavy "groove" velocity thing going.
The only thing that works is lowering the volume of the bassline completely. as soon as you hear a little bit of the baseline then you lose you volume. I hope I won't have to use a multitrack record here...

Re: Problem with Fantom sound output
Interesting. How are you listening to your sequence? Are you using headphones connected directly to your Fantom-X PHONES jack when you hear this? If not, try monitoring through your Fantom-X PHONES jack with headphones and see if you notice this.

Re: Problem with Fantom sound output
yes It does it on every output. The Fantom-S is connected to my Audiophile 24/96 card via Coaxial Digital cable and you can clearly see huge variations in volume from one beat to another. However it ONLY affects the beat as far as I can tell. And only when the bass is present. Just to give you an idea of the difference, looking at the wave file sometimes the kick hits 75% of clipping and other times it clips badly. A note is it does it regardless of hitting clipping or not. This is a huge problem !

AHH !!
I recorded the drum track and the rest seperately using Cool Edit Pro and did a mixdown. Perfect sound now, no up and down. Could it be Voice limit related ?
I still hear the bass drum but just not loud on every kick.
