Aftertouch - how?

Post by pwroberts »

Hi folks,

I'm a new owner of a Fantom X8, and I'm having trouble getting aftertouch working.

If I edit a patch and specify that aftertouch should control (for example) panning, then play with that patch on the pads, then the aftertouch works fine. However, playing with the same patch on the main keyboard, I get no aftertouch effect at all.

Am I correct in believing that the X8's keyboard is aftertouch sensitive? If so, how do I turn it on? I found "aftertouch sensitivity" in the manual but I checked the value in Setup and it's already on "100".

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Try pushing harder - the X8 keyboard has a pretty hard aftertouch response as I remember when I played it.

Yikes, you're right, you do have to press hard, especially on the black keys. It seems to be rather an "all or nothing" effect as well. I guess I'll play with the sensitivity and see what happens.

I don't like pressing my brand new keyboard that hard, it can't be good for it! My old Yamaha P80 digital piano has a number of keys that are damaged and don't bounce back up properly, and I don't want my Fantom's pristine key action to go the same way...

Thanks for your help anyway, Artemio!

Actually, you can create a non-linear sensitivity curve for aftertouch using Matrix Control. Simply set CTRL source to AFTERTOUCH, and then create not one but two or three destinations pointing to the same parameter. This way aftertouch will start affecting that parameter from softer pushing.
