Midi Connection Issue with Reason 7 / Fantom X8

Post by 2Him4Him »

This question could've been answered elsewhere, but I honestly was having troubling knowing exactly what to search for. So I appreciate your patience.....

I just recently bought my first Macbook Pro (I've built my own PC in the past), and today I was trying to connect it to my Roland Fantom X8 and Balance using the Hosa USM-422 midi-to-USB cable. I actually followed the instructions for once (because this all should be plug-in-play), and set up everything in the preferences window, etc. Everything was going along smoothly until I started playing. The Reason patches were playing correctly (and recording correctly as far as I could tell), but as I lifted up each key, there was a "beep/bonk" sound that had nothing to do with the patch - yes, I know that's a fairly technical term :-). I tried several different patches, and they changed sounds, but the "beep/bonk" sound still remained. It's almost like some signal was being sent as I lifted up each key (maybe an aftertouch message???).

Anyway, I checked my settings and I think everything looks right, but obviously I'm missing something. Surely this is an easy fix! On my home rig (PC), I have the same set up, but using a Fantom-S and a Presonus Firestudio as my midi interface (I still used the Propellerhead Balance as my i/o interface). And when I first plugged in everything there, it was all incredibly easy & plug-n-play, and it worked like a charm!

I posted this on the Reason forum, and no one had any solid answers for me, and one person suggested buying a higher quality midi interface - so maybe I should go to Guitar Center and see what they have. Any suggestions? (and yes, I tried turning the local switch off)

Thanks!!

Wow, strange problem. I run Reason with a Fantom X8 and an old M-Audio Firewire interface. Not the same as your interface, of course, but just to illustrate that this shouldn't happen. Can't imagine that the MIDI interface somehow generates data that Reason interprets as a "beep/bonk". Have you had your Fantom for a long time or get it recently? If it is used, you might try a reset to get it back to a known state.

Good luck,

Well it's definitely newer than my Fantom S at home :-) But I actually have some time tonight here at the house to try the Hosa cable with my home rig (in hopes to isolate the problem). If I still have issues, then I'll know it's probably the cable. If it works perfectly, then I'll know it's either the Fantom X or how I have it set up with the Mac (which I guess I can always try here at home too).

If anyone else might have some input, I'm all up for it! I'll still post back anything I find out with tonight's 'experiment'.

THanks!

Try to uncheck on Fantom's System > Midi > Soft Through.
It's posible that Reason is sending back midi input and receive again the same note (midi loop).
Another thing, maybe you are sending 2 midi channels in the same time?
Are you working from patch mode, or mixer/performance mode?
In mixer/layer/performance mode, you may have 2 layers/part enabled (checked kbd on more then 1 part) and sending 2 midi channels on the same time.
See if your recordings have duplicated notes.
Meaning that if you can check a recorded midi part, if you have one midi channel recorded or more...
Like: note A3 at measure 1:1:0 is recorded on midi ch. 1 and 2 or other more...
