The Fantom-X has a PC card slot (PCMCIA, not Card Bus). It uses that slot to access mass data storage devices. You can use any data storage device (that doesn't utilize data encryption). This includes SmartMedia, Compact Flash, and Memory Stick (but not Memory Stick Pro). You can also use micro drives. All you need is a PC card adapter for any of these data storage devices. The Fantom-X is designed to recognize up to 1 GB of data storage, though I've been able to use 2 GB micro drives with it. (The micro drives were defective though so that didn't last long. I had to send them back, but the Fantom-X did recognize all 2 GB of available space).

As for Memory Sticks, do not use Memory Stick Select, they are not compatible with Sony PC Card adaptors.

You can also use MMC cards (they look exactly like SD cards, but don't have data encryption).

The Fantom is not capable of exploiting the higher transfer speeds of "Ultra" and "Extreme" (or 12x or whatever) enhanced flash memory so don't waste your money on it.

SmartMedia is a bad choice...it's being phased out and has a maximum capacity of 128 MB (just like Memory Stick).

It seems to me that Compact Flash is the best choice. It's been around for a long time, has never changed shape, has no compression/encryption built into it, doesn't seem to be much of a capacity limit (they go up to 4 GB now!!!), and they're the cheapest of all the formats.
