Hi guys,
After much debate I've finally decided to sell my X6:

For my X6 I had a professional heavy duty flightcase custom made. It is an extremely good case but fairly heavy (not sure about the exact weight) so I don't think I want to have this kind of case for the X7. I've been looking at 3 cases:
SKB Keycase 5014W
Weight: 9.5 kilograms (20.9 pounds)
128,91 x 38,10 x 13,02cm, for 76 Keys
Polyethyleen hard case with puzzle foam

EUR (~$) 265 + 8 shipping
Gator GK-276R
Weight: same as SKB???????????
Similar to SKB it seems but with velcro straps instead of puzzle foam

EUR (~$) 255 (no shipping, available from local dealer)
Universal no-name wooden flightvase
http://www.musik-produktiv.de/bilder2/1 ... 09118l.jpg
Weight: 15 kilograms (33 pounds)
EUR (~$) 119 + 8 shipping
I don't know how much my current X6 case weighs, but I was surprised to find that the difference between the SKB and this wooden flight case is only 5,5 kilograms. My current flightcase is a really heavy duty version with thick wood so if this one is made from thinner material than maybe my current case really is insanely heavy. he X7 is 2 kilograms heavier than the X6 so if this wooden case is lighterer than my current case it seems like a good deal.
Any thoughts? I suppose I should measure the weight of my current X6 case to ease the decission.
Selling X6, need case recommendation for X7
Re: Selling X6, need case recommendation for X7
Well, a subject I feel relatively qualified on.
Years ago (from 1976 to 1995) I traveled extensively with US Navy bands. We used Anvil and Calzone cases for practically everything. They were heavy, strong, but not indestructible. The ones made with thinner wood panels under the plastic sheath were prone to puncture damage from other cases or similar disasters.
Then, when I bought my JV90 (76 keys) in 1994, I got the SKB case with the puzzle foam (this was before they had models with integrated wheels). Very easy to configure to the exact shape of the keyboard. Very water resistant. It traveled via US Navy aircraft and vehicles until I retired, and has since served my faithfully and without a hitch on a regular basis until the JV90 went into semi-retirement last year (when I got my FS88). I have nothing but praise for the design and build quality of this case. It has been through thick and thin, hot and cold and never skipped a beat.
When I got my FS88, the current SKB model was not quite deep enough (front to back), so I got the Gator, since it was pretty much my only available choice right at that moment. It was also a bit cheaper, as its contstuction and design have born out. I do give credit that it is carrying a much heavier instrument, but I have had to reattach loose carrying handles (they are mounted with small nuts and bolts), and I added a touch of loctite to try and keep that from happening again. I also had one of the small dolly wheels pop its rivet, which I reattached with ease. No point of comparison here, as my SKB has no wheels. The old Anvils and Calzones that had wheels always used the killer ball bearing swivel casters.
The SKB uses the Anvil/Calzone style recessed and riveted handles and clasps, and has a gasket in it recessed lip.
I see that the price difference for the SKB and Gator is not much different, so after saying all that, I would go for the SKB. They are very well made cases.
BTW, Gator cases are made by the guy who started SKB.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the input. I have to say those cases from Thomann are attractively priced
http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/thon_ke ... tml?iwid=2
Only EUR 138 for a 76 key case that weighs only 10 kilograms (I emailed them). That's almost 1/2 of what a Gator or SKB would cost me. The only thing I don't like so much is the ball-corners and the leather grip, but I don't like the SKB/Gator grips either and this case is made by Thomann so maybe I can ask them to put on flat corners and perhaps even a different grip.
Loopyfruit, or anyone else, do you have personal experience with this case?
Thanks again both of you,
Arjan
P.S. I found out today that my current X6 wooden case weighs 17,5kg and the X6+case totals 30kg. If I get one of those 10kg plastic cases for my X7 the total weight will be less, about 25kg!

Hi Arjan
no I don't know anything about the Thomann cases, just that I've bought gear from them and found the service to be excellent.
They don't charge your credit card untill shipping, they keep you informed of your order, the delivery is fast (to UK) and well packaged, and the prices are fair.
Hope you get fixed up.......good luck and let us know how you get on.
