5080 sounds download

Post by mgsr70 »

I see on roland's download page a section to download 5080 sounds for my roland fantom XR. I just got done installing pc editor and the drivers. Took me a second but I go it,thanks to the guys at roland's support number. I was wondering if I download it where does it go and and & where do you pull them up. You might say why do you download them & see. Well I saw or read somewhere that downloading these sounds will OVERWRITE some user patches. This sounds a little scary to me so I hope someone out there can help!
Thanks,
MG

The overwrite has me confused. Does this mean it will erase sounds I already have? I'd like to find somewhere else in the fantom to put them. Or is that not possible?? I'm ready to download it,just don't want to mess anything up. I'm new to all this software stuff!

Downloading them will put them on your PC's hard disk not in your Fantom

Start up the Library program (it came with the editor) and connect it to your Fantom (under the menu item SETUP/SETUP MIDI DEVICES)

Now press the button on the Library program that says ALL in the READ box.
Note that this window is called 'Main' - and it very important.
It is the ONLY window that can WRITE to the FanX.
As you'll see, all the other windows talk to the PC and only to the edit buffer of the FanX.
You copy the sounds between windows and the Main to build up you r USER Patch or Performance or Rhythm or Arps then WRITE it to the FanX so it is saved in memory.

Once you have got the MIDI data from the FanX - takes a while- you need to save the data.

As I said before you can't save a file to your PC from the 'Main' window, you have to Duplicate what you have just got from the Fantom first.
Menu FILE/DUPLICATE. This will cause a new window to appear that looks a little like the MAIN window with out the READ and WRITE areas.
Now you can save this copied data - FILE/SAVE is available then this duplicated window is selected.

Now you have saved all the sounds that are in your Fantom you are safe and can overwrite them with the XV5080 patches you downloaded from the Roland website.

You need to find where IE browser or Firefox saved your file (you can find the directory in the Options area of you browser.)
Unzip the file.
If you don't know how to do these things you might need to see if you can get someone to help.

The file to load will have an extension of 'fxl' As in 'Fantom-X_XV.fxl'.
The fxl stands for FantomX Library file.
So with the Library program load this file in. FILE/OPEN go to the directory where you unzipped the files and load the file.
A new window like the duplicated one you created earlier will appear with the name of the file on the title bar.
Make sure Patch is selected in the Mode dropdown box.
If you double click on any of the patches in the list it will send the patch to the Fantom's edit buffer and the Fantom will start playing the patch.

The edit buffer is where the current patch is set up. Turn off the FanX and it disappears.
There is also edit buffers for other areas of the FanX.
So when the library sends a Patch like this nothing is changed on the FanX. So you can play with all the patches without changing a thing.

You can highlight patches from the file you loaded that you like and use Ctrl C (or EDIT/COPY).
Now go to the Main window and paste them in the list.
Once you have built the list that you like you can use WRITE on the Main window to send AND save the patches to the USER memory in the FanX.
These will be still there after you have turned the FanX off and back on.

Have fun.

Hello mgsr70,

You can find xv-5080 factory presets here:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=38029

There is an SVQ file. You can save patches from it without owerwrite all of your user patches.

1. Load it.
2. Select the patch.
3. Push patch edit button
4. Push write button, and select the place of patch.

What's the difference between the two downloads? The one you are describing sounds way more easier than the other download. Do you still get all the same sounds?

There is an fxl file (librarian file) which you can download from Roland site. You can use it with your librarian softvare.
I uploaded it in 16 SVQ files (1 SVQ file contains 64 sounds), it contains same sounds as in fxl file. You have to copy them your Roland/SEQ/SND folder and load it as a song.
Push RPS button to turn it on.
You can change sounds with pads. (9-16 bank select, 1-8 tone select)
If you want to save a patch: push patch edit -> write button

I think there is an easier way to save your patches you want.

So do I do this in addition to what you described yesterday? Copy them to roland/seq/snd? Where's that? push RPS button? Huh? I have an XR also. I'm kind of a beginner with this software thing

Oops! :)

Sorry, RPS function is unavailable on XR. I thought you have a keyboard, too. In this case you can use only fxl file.

If you switch USB mode to storage when you connect XR to your PC, will find Roland folder on it. XR Owner's manual page 148.

Yes, you have to use librarian softvare to do it. I think it is not too complicated. Sorry but there is no RPS and pattern function on Fantom XR, so you can't use it. :(
